Dashboard cracked ...

yeah.. and it looks like you have to fix the crack to begin with .. plus.. I don't see how it would prevent cracks and therefor even prevent them.

My thought was that when covering the entire dash with a layer of epoxy and then sprinkling a felt like stuff all over it, you are thereby reinforcing the complete dashboard.

As far as cleaning, I would just vacuum the dust with a hose and brush attachment. I just thought I’d share the idea, as an alternative to just replacing the dash or covering it with an ugly carpet cover.

Ah, I see what you mean.

However I suspect, because the layer of epoxy is pretty thin and only on one side, the daskboard would still flex and crack, while that spray on cover wouldn't "hide" it.

but, who knows, maybe someone will try it.

This is what I'm planning on doing. That along with a layer of fiberglass along the entire bottom side. I think that would hold everything and prevent future cracks. Do you think the fiberglass would be too thick to align the dash back up? Or, would it be too stiff and crack even more?
Thoughts?

I am not a "material engineer", but I think one would only need mesh in stress areas, and areas where stress changes. Very much like where drywallers put mesh/tape. The crack I have shows more when the dash is cold, when hot , in the sun, it closes.

I actually think I "started" the crack by prying the dash open to put a gps antenna in. Nothing happened for months. BUT I probably created a "micro crack" that started growing and finally went all through. The dash is pitch black so absorbs heat and dissipates heat all the time. That and poor quality plastic (recycled plastic has shorter polymers strands) causes that probably.

I am thinking of finding a way to press the ends together, and epoxy something underneath, mesh or metal strands. However I don't want to make mess ... and don't want to use something that "eats holes" in the material.. Also, I don't want to take the trim/dash out.

I used plastic epoxy to fix mine when I had it apart to remove the GPS antenna and OEM nav HU. I don't recall exactly but I'm pretty sure it was J-B Weld Plastic Bonder. Got it from Walmart. It dries to a matte/satin black color that's very close to the factory ebony color. I smeared it to the underside of the cracked area and into the crack, rubbing it with my finger to level it and blend it in. It's not glaring, but you can tell where it was repaired. I was just aiming for a quick fix to have each side of the crack level again instead of the 1/4"-1/2" gap from the whole center section of the dash sunken in. I have a couple of pics on page 10, post #98 of my build thread.

If its still small drill a small hole on each end of the crack. May iist have to live with em

I was thinking about something like that. the crack I have is not that big, but it does open/close depending on temperature in the cat. it probably is just a matter of time before it starts to get wider.

I'll have to try that and see. Probably take the airbag cover out and see if I can get to it.

Hello,

maybe the TX heat was a little too much. My dashboard cracked, from the left front corner of the airbag, to the front, it's about an inche, inch and a half long. when pushed together you can't really see it, maybe it was already there, and just never noticed.

Is there a permanent and easy fix for that?

In my opinion it’s crappy material used in making the Dash. I’ve had my original replaced within the first year of owning my truck back in 2012 and now that my warranty is expired I’ll have to pay out of pocket to have this one replaced. This time there are 2 cracks. One by front left side of passenger airbag and the other dead center of the steering wheel and growing
