We've all seen it or have it currently on our trucks. The famous vortec engine cover. And the infamous chipping and fading of the design in the cover. So as a small project and out of boredom I tried this out. Turned out pretty good.

Wet sanded with 600. Then applied silver paint with an oil based sharpie marker found at home depot.

And final result. Near perfect. Up close theres slight blotching from marker strokes but only noticable up very close. Could've painted the stripes above it but like I said this was just a fun project to see how it turned out. Not sure how long it will last with daily use and engine heat.

David, don't worry it will last YEARS. How do I know? Because I already did the same exact thing to mine a few years ago. It's been at least 4-5 years and I actually just had to touch it up this summer. I did the engine cover, and I also did the letters on the under hood fuse box cover.

Thanks for the thread move. I figure engine/drivetrain was all mechanical , but makes sense engine dress up and detail.

Thanks for the heads up Scott. And great idea on the fuse box, I didn't think of that.
Got a pic?

Here you go. I just realized that I didn't touch up the Vortec letters, just the "swooshes".
I originally did this at least 6-7 years ago. I just redid the fuse box cover and touched up the engine cover a few months ago. I should probably sand down the engine cover and redo the entire thing like you did.

You should do the Airaid letters, too.

I sure wish you would have posted this months ago, before I decided to replace my cover with the one made by Whipple. This could have saved me a ton of money.
I'm up there with geico. Saving over 3000% on car insurance

Interesting...as mine is already silver and I never painted it. I did paint the K&N CAI tube blue and the alternator is now black. Might have to hit the fuse box and the K&N letters with the silver though now. Little cheap details...:)

They were all silver to start with, the marker is just a refresher that spiraled into coloring other stuff because silver lettering is so cool. Lol
