Anode, to counter corrosion of aluminum constantly exposed to road salt?

It is a sound damper, to dampen oil pump noise.

Going with this theory my next question is.....

Do NON AFM engines have this plate on the oil pan?

The reason I ask is because the AFM engines use a higher volume oil pump than Non AFM engines.

Are you answering or guessing? Either way, it sounds legit.

We may be getting somewhere...

That's scary to think the oil pump is so noisy you can hear it over the noise of the engine running so I doubt that theory.

I doubt it too. Someone out there has to have an answer.... I wonder if you called GM and needed that plate what you would ask for.... Probably have to buy the whole damn pan... Lol

I looked on Ebay, Some pans have them, some don't. Where is the GM guy when you need him? :party36:

My engine is a 2007 first run 6.2. Which means I have vvt but no dod or dod hardware. It's not just turned off in my tuning like the second run 6.2 my year and later. I did have the high volume oil pump. And I also have that plate.

Here is a picture of the sound deadening plate on top of a Cadillac supercharger. It looks similar to me.

I can understand a sound dampener on a supercharger, they can be loud. They spin at an incredible rpm. But if an oil pump starts sounding like a supercharger I think there might be something wrong with that oil pump.

I'm going with sound deadener, If it was a skid plate it would have more fasteners holding it in place around the periphery. If it was a sacrificial anode it would probably screw inside the pan kind of like a water heater anode. Sound deadener is my Vote, just my 2 cents

You guys do realize the 'skid plate' comment was a joke right? Because in now way would this be an effective skid plate design or location.

It could just be added weight to keep from popping wheelies all the time from the awesome power these engines put out... Kinda like a ballast.

I did some searching online and it is acctually a cover plate. If you want to remove it and install the part it is part number 121G on O'Reilly website

Very interesting.... It doesn't appear to cover anything from what I can tell.... Would be cool if it were an access to the oil pump pickup tube bolt.
