will dip hold up?

ive got some flaking on my running boards. appears they are aluminum.
i touched it up with rustoleum black but after a few months, flaking again.
considering plasti dip, but i want to know if it will hold up. i go through the car wash pretty much weekly.

Did you prep your running boards? I would sand them lightly and spray bedliner.

i did prep, but i think thats a spot with road gravel etc. so maybe bedliner is a better choice. good idea

I dipped my grille GMC emblem a few years ago, and it's held up like a champ. Haven't had to touch it up at all. I also dipped the endcaps for esky rails, and haven't had any issues yet. Of course it's only been a month...

If you do dip them, make sure you do 1-2 light coats about 15-20 min apart at first, then heavy coats after that 20 min apart. I'd say at least 6-7 really heavy coats. Protects it better, and peels off infinitely easier if you ever want to remove it.

Dipped the lower valance on my 04 Tahoe. Held up great for 3 years only one small spot where the fog light rubbed on it.

Hell it even held up when I decided to rear end a dodge and total it haha!

just did my grille yesterday, came out pretty good. i cleaned it and sanded it with 220 first. i even sanded my billet bowtie.

no need to sand for the dip, just clean with alcohol and it will stay for a long time. my rear bumper has been done for 3 years and havent had to redo it yet. if you spray regular clear on it it will probably stay forever. it took 20 minutes at a carwash to remove it off one wheel with regular clear

Instead of clear, which I understand makes it I bit harder to peel off, plastidip actually makes a glossifier. Makes it more of a gloss finish, but it's designed to make it just as easy to peel off, should you want to. But, if you s want to make it as permanent as possible, clear would be the way to go.

the glossifier is good but on the white wheels the brake dust stuck to it really bad. i just changed out my pads and rotors so shouldnt have much of a dust problem now but i do really like the white so i want it as permanent as i can

I plastic is pretty solid I have my front grill and both front rear chrome bumpers painted as well as my rims. The other nice feature with plastic dip is if you scuff it or rub against something that takes a chunk out you can just respray that spot since it it slef leveling paint. My friend plastic dipped his winter tires 4 years ago they are still holding. So as long as you a bunch of coats you shold be good.

I would just try again with spray paint but this time its all about the prep. A good sand down, wash, self etching primer, sand, primer( for good measure), sand, paint, then clear coat (gloss or matte).
