Mods feel free to move b/c this probably has a better location than here...

I ask this because I am genuinely curious.

I notice a lot of you guys have multiple SUVs, especially of the same generation. It probably comes with the enthusiast territory.

What's the benefits of having multiple SUVs? I feel like I would end up driving one way more than another, but I've also never had the luxury of having two of the same car lol.

when you learn all the ins and outs of a platform and then another pops for a good deal, you have parts laying around. sometimes you say eh, why not.

also nice to have a back up vehicle around and usually much cheaper to have 2 older paid off vehicles than one new one you gotta pay payments on. also all the new stuff is kinda junk these days and 5 times more expensive and harder to fix.

tons of reasons why, like anything
1. for me
1. for her
1. pickup which is a multi purpose. I don't have to go rent anything I can go to the dump, I can bring home whatever, i can tow whatever as well with all 3
I would have 5 or 6 vehicles but no room to park them all
1. never without transportation it would be a cold day in hell if all 3 broke down at the same time

Accumulation happens too… I just downsized my garage making room for new projects. Sold a sports car I had and a SRT that someone wanted more than I did. Kept my Land Cruiser and my wife’s car. Nice having multiple big vehicles for specific purposes as other have said and for a backup vehicle.

Unlike most of you, I have 1 truck and 1 non-truck. That combo suites me 90+% of the time.

HOWEVER............. And the timing of this thread is scary.....

The mice in my back yard decided to build a city in my snow blower air cleaner / carburetor in my shed this past year, after leaving it untouched for the past 5 years. But, after vacuuming it out and seeing that the 'residents' pi**ed and shi**ed way down into the carburetor, I decided to have somebody else fix it. Clean or replace scenario. (I'm quite capable of doing it myself, but at my age, I am more selective in what I do, and what I farm out to others).

Anyway, to get my snow blower to the shop and back, I had to rent a U-Haul trailer TWO times to complete the maintenance project. This is not a costly rental item, but it is a PIA from a time and transportation standpoint. IF I had that second SUV, AND if it was a pickup truck with a set of ramps, this snow blower project would have been MUCH easier and quicker, overall.

There it is. A specific use case potentially in support of multiple SUVs.

We camp / pull a trailer. I keep my old SUV as an emergency backup tow vehicle after the debacle we had with AAA who refused to give us service because we had a trailer - even though we paid top $ that was supposed to include trailer service.

Getting tow service when you have a trailer attached is a next level tier from just a regular vehicle tow - and in this way, we can take care of our trailer ourselves if we must.

I like having two or more of the same or similar platforms. In the 80s and 90s we had 5 Buicks in the driveway plus a couple of Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs each. It was easy to find out if something was wrong by grabbing a part from a sister vehicle. Then we had 3 Pontiac Montana minivans and then replaced them with the GMT900 trucks and wagons.

We've always had needs for a pickup so it's been nice having them. We often haul 5 or more people around as well and the Yukon XL fills that chore nicely. I really wish we had two but my wife wants the shorter one. The pickups can each seat 5 if necessary.

I have my Yukon XL for towing, boonie bouncing, DD and anything else i wanna do with it. It's big, it's comfy and i love it.
The wife has an Avalanche. DD, GG and take the covers off the bed makes it i dump runner, dirt hauler, furniture hauling machine. Take the covers off, take the rear window out and fold down the seat in the summer. Big comfy and the wife loves it. Me not so much.

We have a fairly large utility trailer because of this exact reason… issue is every couple yrs I have to put new tires on it… might be cheaper to rent at that point

I own more than one vehicle because I really do not get rid of them. I still own my first car from college, a 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo with a a 350 V8, 4 barrel carb and Turbo Hydromatic transmission. It has been restored inside and out and runs and looks great. The color is Tourquoise with a black vinyl top. I have owned this Monte Carlo for 51 years.

My daily driver is a 1996 Jeep Cherokee that I have owned for 30 years. It has 228,000 miles on it and runs every day. The 4.0L engine has never been touched expect for a valve cover gasket. I did have the tranmission restored about 5 years ago. It is Flame Red and has a good shine on it, I did have it repainted 4 years ago due to sun damage on the hood and roof.
I use the Jeep as my around town vehicle and pull a small utility trailer for the trips to the dump, Home Depot and the John Deere dealer to get my tractor mower serviced every two years.

Our trip vehicle is my 2001 Tahoe with 132000 miles on it. It stays in the garage every night along side my Monte Carlo while the Jeep has been outside every night. The Tahoe is Forest Green and I just finished a polish and wax job about 2 weeks ago. I have owned this Tahoe for 24 years and it still loves to do 80mph.

I like having more than one vehicle in case one is down and I really cannot get rid of them. My wife on the other hand gets a new crossover every 3-4 years. You all know, Happy Wife = Happy Life!

Because the wife needs one! Also having 2 of the same generation helps with troubleshooting issues since I'm familiar with everything.

I know at least 3 people with 10+ vehicles that are lucky to have one that runs at any given time. One guy had 18, and the only one that ran was a 1967 Buick. It died and he called his boss to tell him couldn't make it to work. His boss told him that if he couldn't find a way to work, he better look for another job. Good thing one of his bikes worked.....

I have 2 because one is basically a race truck with blower, cam, headers etc and the other is a low key nicely modded-for-looks one. Plus the race truck broke down and I needed something to drive immediately so I bought a newer one and started modding it instead of fixing the race truck because I couldn’t stand driving a stock vehicle. :D BTW I have links to all of my build threads in my signature at the bottom of my post. I also have a bagged and body dropped Silverado because I needed a toy truck. :happy107:

I get asked that all the time from coworkers, inlaws, etc. For me, growing up, there were always multiple vehicles around. It was normal to ride in and drive various makes and models.

High school, '56 Chevy Sedan and '65 C20.

After high school, same, but added a '70 F100 in 1992. The 56 was from mom. The trucks were grandpa's.

1996-Sold the F100.

1997-Bought dad's '79 GMC Sierra Grande 4x4 after he passed. He was going to give it to me, my brother made me buy it help pay for the funeral costs.

1998-Ended up selling the 56, didn't want to but needed to. Long, bad story.

2001-Sold the 79 to my other brother.

2002-Bought a 91 Cherokee 4x4. 88k, now has 227k on original drivetrain. One of the best, most reliable vehicles I have owned.

2005-Rolled the C20. Bought another 65 C20, it turned out to have a junk frame. Needs to be rebuilt with good parts.

2009-Bought a 2005 Outback, good car, but not for a single guy, sold it to my then girlfriend in 2012. It served its purpose hauling around me, the dogs, the girlfriend and her kids before she got it.

2012-Bought a 2007 Forester 2.5 XT Limited, fun car! This replaced the outback, and got me back to shifting gears again.

2012-Bought an 81 C20 because I needed a running truck. Good truck, wife hates it. I offered 1k expecting to haggle, the PO said come get your truck off my property.

2015-Bought a 65 C20 because I missed the sound of old gear box under the floorboard. Wrecked it 6 years later thanks to a-hole-e-o pulling out in front of me, nowhere to go but hit his truck. Needs work.

2018-Wife bought a 2017 Buick Regal 2.0t, fun car!

2025-We talked about having a full size SUV for when her family visits, so we can load up the dogs, the gear, and the people and still be comfortable. Looked at suburbans, but bought the 2005 Tahoe LS 4x4, good vehicle.

Need to cull. Most likely will be the FXT, and considering the wrecked C20 along with it.

The regal is a one-owner car. The rest except for the junk frame 65 c20 are 2nd-owner and 3rd-owner vehicles.

Why? Because it's good to have variety, and back-up wheels when working on another one.
