So it looks like I need to take it back and have it drained.....what a PITA!

"The G80 is a limited slip differential that locks under certain conditions. It is made by Eaton and is nicknamed the Eaton "locker".

G80 additive or not?

Whether the additive is needed in the rear diff can be discussed by all of us but that effects the locker or limited slip and not the pinion bearing. That is why I asked if the pinion seal was replaced on the initial go round before the noise came about. Not retensioning the pinion nut, if pinion seal was replaced, is a known problem when doing that. That additive did not cause pinion bearing failure, if in fact that is the problem. I always use what the manual says to use, PERIOD. I do not guess at it at all. The vehicle left the factory with the correct fluid. Use that fluid. I use AC Delco fluids when doing this work. If they did not do a seal, then it is just plain bad luck.

Just finished reading the entire internet about whether or not to use the friction modifier and the answer is NO.
The pinion seal was not replaced during the first fluid Change 2 weeks ago before the noise started.
They just unbolted the cover, cleaned and replaced it and filled it back up.
I checked the invoice and there is no mention of any additives added. (The first time)

I noticed the noise right after I picked it up and just excused because of the thinner gear oil I provided and or the spare tire being dropped and being able to hear more of the diff noises..
But it got louder.
This evening when I picked the truck up, I questioned the friction modifier listed on the invoice and he said they added it because it was a "LS".
Now I'm 6 hours into reading all there is about the G80 locking differential.
Yawn..

I have owned many a rig with a limited slip diff. Some companies call them a "locker". That makes it sound better than a "slip". I use to own a purpose built off road 73 Blazer that was nicknamed Brutus. I have talked about it here a few times. It had true lockers in it. I had Detroit lockers in 4.88 gear diffs. If you want to hear the clacking sounds of a locker, put those in a diff you drive every day. My rig was not legal for the street. Trailered everywhere I took it.

Depending on the design and clutches, some of them need the additive, the daily driver rig. I have the G80 and don't use additive because I put what is SUPPOSED to be put in that diff. I have no problems at all. Stick to what is supposed to be put in that diff. Don't guess at it. Don't assume the weather makes a difference in what should be in there. There is a reason a rig leaves the factory with what is installed in it. Quit trying to second guess everything. When you rebuild and do a different form of a locker/slip, use what is recommended by the manufacturer.

Spent about 5 hours last night reading and scouring all corners of the net on this issue, even letters from Eaton from people who have written them about it. Any additive in the G80 is considered a contaminate and should be flushed and refilled with strait up Synthetic 75-90.
