Hi there,

New to the 5.3 ecotec. I recently bought a 2018 Yukon XL SLE. I didn’t really notice it when test driving it, but have started to notice a moaning sound on startup and acceleration. Kinda sounds like a power steering pump, but I know it’s not since these things are electric power steering. The noise rises with the throttle while in gear and park. Shutting the ac and heat system on and off doesn’t affect it. No power loss or codes.

Is this a typical sound for a 5.3? Any others had issues with this and located the culprit? (Water pump? Transmission?)

Perhaps I’m being a bit over cautious but I’d expect to hear only the growl of the engine.

Thanks

Remove the belt(s) from the motor temporarily and start the motor. Do you hear the moan. If you don't, then it is safe to start assuming that the moan is coming from something that is belt driven. If you still hear the moan, then you can cross off some potential causes, and then keep troubleshooting.

I am also new to the 5.3 and it does make more sounds than my 08 5.3. The pitter patter of the direct injection was one thing, I also have a bit of a groan but with 188,000 miles I expected some things to come up. Still working out the kinks and dialing it in.

Haven't looked into the groan

Is it a girl truck or a boy truck?

I know, I'm late, Glad you found the problem.
I just wanted to note for others, on my 06 Z71 4WD Tahoe, I had a similar moaning sound while driving. In my case much to my embarrassment I eventually found that the front differential was dry. Yes, all the oil had leaked out. I guess since I wasn't using the 4WD at the time it didn't cause any other symptoms.
