Ok so I got the parts ordered up here.

But now I am reading it's an easy swap to the 14 bolt diffs. Did those come with 3.42s? And what vehicle can I get them out of?

Ok so all the repair shops in the area are 2+ weeks out. I can't wait that long. I was quoted $750 for just the basic diff install.

My plan will be to tear it open on Tuesday, see if I can do the job myself.

If I can't, I am just going to get a junkyard one to get it back running.

14 bolts are on the 3/4 ton burbs and trucks. Leaf springs. Easy swap with a welder and fab shop! You would be bullet proof tho!

Called place and verified it's 14 bolt, 3.42 and 9.5 ring gear. Comes as entire axle assembly. I'd much rather do this, can have truck back on road by Monday rather than fiddling around with something I've never done before.

Ok so the 14 bolt is not a direct swap it seems you need a custom driveshaft.

I don't want to mess with all these unknowns..

So I either roll the dice and try to fix it with the truetrac

Or I just grab another junkyard 10 bolt to get it quickly back on the road.

Haha yup. The ring gear looked fine. I saw no cracks in the housing, all the fluid still there. I am going to just swap out the diff.

If I have trouble, then I will pickup a stock replacement since I now know they're readily available somewhat locally.

From what I read from randeez 14 bolt swap thread, he used a custom driveshaft. I don't want to mess with that, don't have time and can't risk it.

I thought I read somewhere they make conversion u-joints with different caps on the crosshairs to match what you are fitting together.

Yeah they do. I'm worried about the driveshaft part, if it's too short then I would be weeks away from having the truck ready.

I wanna get this thing back on the road quickly. At my power level, I am confident the stock 8.6 ring gear with the beefed up diff will be plenty strong.

Some people have remarked the locker is optimal for snow and the posi can have issues with both tires spinning.

Not sure if it applies to this truetrac.

It’s not a black and white answer to what happens with LSD in the snow. Sometimes it’ll help. For example one tire on ice, the other side on dry pavement. LSD has a bias to rotate both axles at the same speed, so it’ll help you get moving.

Sometimes it hinders. E.G. ice on a crowned road under both tires. Both will likely break traction simultaneously and sideways you will go. Turning tight corners with minimal traction is another situation that can be tricky because LSD will be biased to maintain a straight line.

On the whole the benefits outweigh the negatives, especially considering you have a 4x4 where you have the front axle working. Very few drivers would be able to operate a vehicle in 4x4 and feel any difference from LSD in the rear. Operating in 2WD is where the difference is more apparent.
