My voltage meter has consistently always read 14 volts. Now it reads 13 even after extending driving periods. Does this mean the alternator is getting weak? The battery is 1 year old.

My truck is a 2003 z71 Tahoe. I understand what you are saying, its just that its always read 14 volts until now. I will do some research to help me better understand the variable charging system and what years it is used. Thank you for your reply. What is the year and model of your truck?
Many of these trucks have an automated variable charging system that prevents the battery from being overcharged and the alternator running more than it has to. For trucks with these automated variable charging systems, you will see the voltage gauge fluctuate between 14+ volts and 11+ volts. Typically, I see the higher voltage when the truck is cold, and then I see lower voltage after running the warmed up truck for a while.
My initial thought is that is what you are seeing, if there are no other electrical-related peculiarities occurring at the same time.
