Newbie here in need of a lil bit help, I have a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 4x4 200,+ miles . That won’t move in reverse and won’t stay on a incline when put in park. Also rattles( like rocks in a can) when driving from transmission area, no 2nd gear(shifts from 1st to 3rd gear). No previous transmission problems and fluid is clean and red. Any info help or way to determine if I need transmission rebuilt, or rearend, or transfer case. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My first thought is the Sun Shell based on no reverse and no second gear.
When you say it won't stay on an incline are you saying you have no park at all or a slight roll?

Anyway the rear axle could be the problem or transfer case? Just asking this stupid question because those 2 were mentioned to me today at a transmission shop. But I’m almost certain it’s the transmission is shot to suns hell. Any way to be certain of transmission without pulling it out of truck ?

Yes, anything in the drivetrain behind the rear ring gear in the transmission (which is where the parking pawl locks)that is broke can cause no Park condition i.e. t case diff etc or a broken trans ring gear

You could put the rear end up and listen to it in a gear that works too see how the pumpkin/axle sounds. Usually with the transfer case, the lights on the 4wd switch won't do what they're supposed to if it's trouble.

its odd your having a no 2nd and 4th condition AND a park issue, usually those are 2 separate issues. Generally broken ring gear and planets in the trans will cause no Park with a grinding or ratching type sound when its rolling away in Park. A broken sun shell may make a grind in reverse but won't affect Park
