TPMS - do I need the dealer to save me?

Guys,

I recently (last week) had some new tires put on. For the last week, the TPMS sensors have been working fine, all reporting pressures. I know that I had to re-learn them because the wheels were put back on in different places, so my pressures weren't showing for the right wheel.

I have the re-learn tool. I have used it many times before on other trucks, and once before on this truck. I know how to do it and the tool works fine. I went to re-learn this time, got through the left front, right front just fine. When I got to the right rear, I could NOT get the thing to register. I tried numerous times, held the tool at several different places (sidewall, valve stem, rim, inner sidewall) and nothing worked. I can't get past the right rear.

Now, even though my pressures are fine and I presumably have four working TPMS sensors, I have to deal with that stupid little TPMS light which is more annoying than my wife. Am I missing something? Is there a trick to getting this corner to read the re-learn device? Or do I have to waste a day at the stupid dealer getting this fixed?

maybe you went out of order ...try again, passenger front first then passenger rear then driver rear then driver front

I go by the truck. Driver front, passenger front, passenger rearm driver rear. The truck tells you where to go.

if you are doing everything correct like stated above then it may just be a bad sensor, almost any tire/wheel dealer can hook you up with a sensor, you can expect to pay generally 50-65 for a sensor installed (aftermarket) the dealer will get you for probably double that.

Yep they do go bad, sounds like you just have take a dump on ya, as was stated new can had for about $50.00

Use your MDI with GDS software to check it, see what the computer sees.

and by the way f the dealer....

I couldn't agree more. I'm not a fan of any auto repair shops. For a guy used to doing stuff on his own, I've never liked being at the mercy of "professionals" because 95 out of 100 times they're completely full of sh*t and are generally dishonest hacks.

The sad fact is there's so much on these modern vehicles that you must have done professionally, you aren't left with much choice if you want things done the right way.

That's why I suggest you checking it out with your MDI with GDS software, the most important tool in your toolbox! I know you don't have it, yet. ;)

Well what I did was when it prompted me to scan that tire, I scanned the left rear instead and it registered that immediately. So I'm fairly confident now that the sensor is bad (or not reading the calibration tool for whatever reason).

Just find it odd that it was sending a signal to the truck just fine all along, only when I went to recalibrate them did it disappear.

That's why I suggest you checking it out with your MDI with GDS software, the most important tool in your toolbox! I know you don't have it, yet. ;)

OK I just priced MDI's and GDS software and I can confidently say that those items will never, ever be a part of my toolbox.

when I bought my 18 I bought it online, in the photos it showed the tire tpms readings, I had it delivered and the salesman drove it about 6 hours to me, mid-way on that trip it decided there was no tpms signal, come to find out there were no tpms installed at all, whoever had traded it in had swapped the wheels out and it took it that long to electronically figure out there was no tpms signal. needless to say the dealer paid for new tpms but it just goes to show how it can still maintain a "ghost" tpms signal.

OK I just priced MDI's and GDS software and I can confidently say that those items will never, ever be a part of my toolbox.
you could buy the vxdiag nano and use a laptop or tablet and install the hacked china software to get a functional mdi and gds, cost me about $220. 100 for the vxdiag and 100 for a dell windows tablet (needs a USB type a port). you have to disable the windows security and antivirus settings to get it installed because it changes some windows files to make it work without having to buy the gds subscription. some people have expressed concern about it possibly having a virus but personally to me it doesn't matter I bought the tablet as a dedicated automotive tool I don't put my personal info on it anyway.
