After 1 1/2 yrs of running with blue led side blinkers, a bored cop decided to bust my balls. Not only are they illegal--because they're blue--but they're 1,000% illegal lol. I get it.

No ticket, just a warning. Changed thrm to white today.

Now I'm sure if the same cop sees me now, he'll pull me over again to tell me that white bulbs are 1,000% illegal, and they should be amber. He also told me that pretty much all aftermarket tail lights are also illegal unless DOT is stamped on them, and alot of cops just ignore it. I get that too. Holy shit! He must've been seriously bored.

If your taillights are cop magnets, then my stock Tahoe tails are, too.

Unless you have those LED bulbs with crappy output that you can barely tell the difference in brightness between running and braking lights.

No leds back there, like you said they have lousey output. I don't know what these are called, but they have pretty decent output. You can tell when I'm stepping on the brakes.

Your tail lights are fine, aslong as they aren’t dim, work correctly and aren’t darkly tinted you should be fine

Yeah, they're good to go. I honestly don't know what he was talking about.

I believe he was referring to the tail light housings, not the bulbs themselves. To wit, he's correct. Most aftermarket head, turn, and tail light housing manufactures don't manufacture them to DOT/SAE specs and therefore can't bare the markings.

See that little diode at the bottom of them that's attached to a circuit board? That tells me that's an LED array bulb.

I was, too. They're similar in design to my stock tails being all red with a clear square for the reverse light. I mentioned the bulbs because maybe the officer didn't like the bulbs but just said "tail lights", speaking generally.

I can see how those bulbs would attract negative attention. That style has been around for ages and I never liked them. Their light pattern is just a small glowing dot inside the housing. The LEDs being red and being inside a red housing is about the only saving grace.

***EDIT***

Tony posted as I was typing this that only the reverse is LED. So, the cop had to have just been talking about the housings. True, if they're not DOT stamped, then they're technically not legal. They can be identical in every way to OEM and even better than OEM, but if they don't have that stamp then they're illegal.

These all light up white. I have no idea what they're called. Array led?

I originally had regular led bulbs for brake lights snd they SUCKED! When the brakes were applied you couldn't even tell.

Yeah an "array" is anything placed or grouped together that intensifies the effect of said thing. Some LED "bulbs" will have a single LED and a projector, some will be an array, some will be a Festoon - which is a tower with a couple LEDs on top and a bunch on the sides.

The type you have is an array.
