I've found pics of boxes with subs on top, bottom and rear like these... but,
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Would there be a disadvantage to mounting the subs on the front side of the box a short distance from the back of the third row seats?

, that makes sense. My preference is to have them facing forward near the back side of the seat. All of my previous vehicles have been single cab trucks and the subs always faced forward... but many years ago, when we had a system in my wife's car, I tested facing forward, up and backwards... backwards sounded best. Our SUV's don't have trunks (well, not enclosed anyway) so I don't think the same would apply... but I also don't want to make the mistake of having a custom box built and it not sound as good as it should or could.
