Shifter cable bushing gone. New one or zip tie?

First under carriage inspection. My neighbor has a lift and I put up the 09 today and started checking everything out. The shift cable was just hanging on as you can see below. A doorman new bushing is $19 and they have it at oriley, BUT I have a zip tie right here for free. Is there any real benefit to the rubber bushing?

i used a steel washer and a steel twist tie it only cost a few pennies....
for the last 10k miles far superior to what gm offers or the parts store...


Yes i shift it a lot too from drive to m4 very frequently..(to manually restart the engine otherwise there is a high chance of stalling out)

just keep a spare in the rig

E Clips Circlip C Clip Retaining Clips might also work (i suspect this is why it keeps popping off ) because it deteriorated and broke off as it has a grove for it

i tried replacing mine it was still popping off that is why the washer was a better repair or c clip might work

Theres some on eBay for $7 that come with a C/E clip. Might do that one.

I tried the bushingfix one, the material they use is like a rubber after a few weeks it was coming off so I fixed it with a washer and a cotter pin then just about a month ago I looked under there and the thing was completely gone so I bought this fitzall and it's actually plastic or nylon and wont disintegrate like the rubber did

Pull the shift lever, drill it out with 1/4 drill bit. Insert this from the trans side, top with washer and cotter pin. Cut off remainder. Done forever…

When mine popped, I tried to use zip ties but they would only work for temporary usage. I could feel the shifter fighting to get into gear. I ended up getting the part for o'reilly but definitely didnt spend $20, it was max $15. Mine broke when I was picking something up from a person's house. On the way home, it came off when test shifting at a walmart. I could always slide under car and put it back in to get to my next destination but if anyone drives the car besides you, thats the last thing you want to have happen.

Yup, I was headed to an office to do some work and I stopped for lunch. Came off at the food truck. Crawled under and put it back on. I don't know how it came off, I thought I tied that so well. Oh well, yeah I got a pack from oreiley and yeah its was like $15. So its all good. Thanks. For anyone reading in the future... don't zip tie it! lol

Used the doorman bushing and all has been well. Doing oil change and oil cooler block off plate gasket (which was a disaster , post to come later about it) and took a look at it and it was kinda coming off. The bushing was there and grabbing the thing but wasn’t on well. These things really need a cotter pin.

I just made my own out of aluminum. I might make another one in bronze if this wears out too fast.

Mine came off in my 2010 first time it has ever not made it home, 274,000 miles not too bad. I went to O'Reilly and got the bushing kit then found a C-clip to help hold it but the C-clip won't hold it if the busing fail it isn't big enough diameter. So will see how long the O'reilly "help" section busing lasts.

I used the Dorman bushing on my 2012. It's a better design than the OEM one was, and so far it's holding up great.

I tried replacing the bushing multiple times. It just didn't snap on well and popped off again later. I finally drilled a hole in the end of the pin and stuck a cotter pin through it to lock the bushing on. The metal was pretty soft and it drilled through easily.
