I tried to find the answer on here but no luck. It’s my first time ordering or even owning a new car. It’s my sixth tahoe/yukon but always been a few years old. This time I said I’m going to be ordering a new Z71 Tahoe exactly how I want it. Will the dealer negotiate price at time of order or when it comes in? Am I stuck at msrp or will they negotiate terms? What I’m going with is:

Tahoe Z71
Diesel (you guys sold me on it)
Black on black
Off road capability package
Comfort package
Tech package

You can negotiate a final price at order time. However, unless you get the price in writing (such as a signed purchase order) - your dealer may not honor the price when the vehicle arrives (knowing you really want the vehicle as you ordered it).

The general rule of thumb is you can custom order a vehicle but they will not negotiate on price. The dealers have no incentive to negotiate since they are using their allotment and giving it to a dedicated buyer.

Compare this to a vehicle on their lot, they are highly incentivized to negotiate since the longer it sits, the more it costs them.

Unless you get a negotiated price upfront, on the order, signed by the dealer, I would not hold my breath for a negotiation. You WILL be eligible for any promotions GM corporate is offering (ie: 4% for 72 months, $X,*** off specific models, etc.) Anything offered by corporate you are still eligible for)

I have been buying new vehicles (almost all GM) since my first new car, a 1975 Chevrolet Nova 2 door custom.

I have ordered many new vehicles, including a Corvette. I have never paid MSRP for an ordered vehicle, and have always negotiated the purchase price (excluding any manufacturer’s rebates).

I do not know how you determined it is a rule-of-thumb for a dealer to not negotiate on price?

Personal experience. I too have ordered vehicles and the dealers have told me exactly what I typed in my post.

Everyones results will vary based on dealer, location, vehicle, timing, etc.

We ordered two and paid sticker for them back during covid when most dealers were charging $5-15k in market adjustments. These days I'd shop dealers until someone was willing to discount an ordered unit. Have you searched online for your build? Looks like there are more than I would have thought of black on black Z71s with the diesel...
