I have an 07 LTZ Tahoe with the power folding mirrors. Boy are they the crappiest things Chevy could have put on this very expensive vehicle. First the drivers side quit folding, then the passenger. And man are they proud of the replacements. I've read that there is a plastic gear inside that fails all the time. Of course GM won't acknowledge the problem and will only sell the complete mirror. Buying used is no help because they have the same gear. I've heard someone has redesigned a new metal gear for these. Are they available yet? Anyone tried disassembling these mirrors?

I agree with you that these mirrors are crap, or, at the very least, the plastic gear that drives the motion is crap. Terrible engineering. My driver-side mirror won't move on its own---I can feel and hear the motor running, but I'm 99% sure that the plastic gear is in pieces. My passenger-side mirror works fine. I don't care that much either way, since I don't use the feature.

I watched a YouTube a few weeks ago where a guy had taken his Escalade mirror off the vehicle and disassembled it. He couldn't stand the thought of paying a crazy sum (like $1,200) for the dealer to replace it. Looks like a pretty involved process with lots of parts.

Thanks for the link. I've placed an order and will update after installation. Their website has installation instructions. Looks a bit complicated, but we shall see.....

Sounds great.
Yup, it looks more complicated than I care to dive into, especially since I don't use the feature. But please do share your opinion after the installation.

Hope it fixes the sloppy, flaps in the wind feature also. Lol GM should have did a recall on these.

Glad that you mentioned the flapping. My driver-side mirror flaps/vibrates at speeds greater than 50 mph yet my passenger-side mirror is rock-solid. I had not linked this to the failed power-folding (i.e., failed gear) but it sounds logical.

Please report if your mirror is solid at highway speeds after you replace the gear.
Thanks

Well it's been a week since I ordered the gears and I still have not received them. Let's see how long it takes to get them. Not a good way to start promoting a new item, IMO.....

It said on their website :*** THIS PRODUCT IS IN DEVELOPMENT, WE WILL SHIP JUNE 2016 *** so it looks like you might have to wait. But $ 50 for 2 small plastic gears? Wow.

I'm pretty sure their new gears are metal. But yeah, Wow.....
They sure took my payment, so I would think they were ready to ship.

It's description says it's "strengthened plastic" but it does come with a lifetime warranty.

Agreed, trying to decide if I just buy an entire mirror, seams like such a waste for a plastic gear.

The problem with buying another mirror is they will have the same plastic gear that breaks. And they're not cheap. I've spoken to the guy that is making the new gear. They tested a metal one and it would wear out the other plastic gear it made contact with. Thus, it has to be plastic to plastic. The new plastic gear is supposed to be a different type of "strengthened" plastic. I haven't recieved it yet to see how it compares and works.
