Its integral to the valve cover.

+1. And it's about a 20 minute job in the driveway with a cheap socket set to replace it.

What makes you think it needs replacing? I've seen people go 300K on these or more and never change it.

There is no valve. It's a fixed orifice. Since you're on this track, what you SHOULD be looking at is if your driver side valve cover is the updated one designed to reduce oil consumption. Unfortunately, other than having knowledge or documentation that it was updated, you'll have to remove the cover to see. It's not a difficult nor lengthy task, though. It is quite the worthy upgrade to have. While you're getting your hands dirty in the PCV system, install a catch can.

there is a pcv valve nipple located on the valve cover, attached to a rubber hose, the nipple certainly looks like a pcv valve, and i can't pull it out by hand.

I have 290,000 on it and i just replaced the oil pressure switch and the filter under it. So i am contemplating the pcv valve idea. only as a back yard mechanic so to say.

Ok nearly a year after the OP but, I’m consuming oil, not seeing out the tailpipe and I have no leaks. Not in the coolant either.
I’m being told it’s the PCV. I can’t find a valve online anywhere, just replacement lines 4 to be exact from Rock Auto.

Also how do I know which “updated” valve cover looks like? Any pics of old vs updated.

Thanks

The pcv is built into the valve cover (baffling)
2007-08 = GM pt# 12570427
2009-2011 = GM pt# 12642655
Here are pics of old and new VC from/for my 2007 and the catch can I installed.

See this TSB: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2012/SB-10062524-7690.pdf and note the underside pics of the old and new valve covers.

I don't think any reputable seller would offer the old style with the round hole. Look for the one with the rectangular hole. Every LEFT one on Rock Auto is the updated style.

@jniolon
follow this technical service bulletin (TSB) TSB 10-06-01-008M. Here is a pic of my old and new driverside valve covers when I did the TSB back in 2018: Notice the difference in the shape of the hole in the upper right corner.

Um, don't mean to intrude on a GMT900 discussion, but many years ago,
I put a 12572717 PCV 'whistle' on his 94 LT1, and it reduced my oil consumption to 0.5Qt after 5000 miles.
My L59 also has its 12572717, but jumping ahead a bit, can my L59 make use of either of these

valvecovers? If not how do I know which valvecovers are most current for my old@$$ engine?

The one ending in 0427 should be for yours (per Rock Auto). It has the integrated PCV orifice that's updated. You'd no longer need the rattle PCV valve.

It's also indicated for my '04, but I don't have much oil consumption now so it hasn't been changed on my L59.

Got rid of my PCV rattler 2 weeks after I bought my Z71; replaced the rattle with a 12572717 PCV 'whistle' / orifice, but I've literally no clue which valvecovers I have. Referring to the 12572717 as a PCV whistle because now, when my engine idles, it whistles a lil bit. Seriously.
ANYWAY
I can install 12570427 on my '02?

I don't know why not. Go to www.gmpartsgiant.com and enter your VIN. Go to the Engine section, under Engine Assembly-Cylinder Head & Related..., and find your valve covers.

Here's what it shows for my '04 VIN, an updated part for a vehicle not included in the TSB:
