Old and new ...

Hi,
In old cars the 4x4 system had 2 differentials and 2 gearboxes as well, but in the new ones there is only the rear differential. How does this system work?
What about the gearboxes? How many of them are there?

4wd vehicles still have 2 differentials and a transfer case.

Now, if the vehicle is AWD, the transfer case and front differential are always engaged and can’t be disengaged.

If the vehicle has 2HI, 4HI and maybe 4LO or Auto4WD, the transfer case engages and shifts depending on the selection and the front differential engages or disengages depending on what is selected.

If they are 4WD, yes.

Like Wade is saying. If you have 4wd you HAVE to have a differential at the front and one at the rear and the transfer case for AWD or selective 4wd.
