First off... I am not an audio guy at all.

I can turn screws and spin wrenches all day long, but diagnosing this stuff is hopeless for me.

02 Tahoe, non-Bose system.

Sound quality is crap. all speakers are working and I can hear the sub as well.

ANY bass at all... having bass turned all the way up, sounds like crap. Like someone dribbling a basketball on the roof.
Everything else is clear and well defined... just no depth at all to it.

Contrast to the stock system in my 99 Yukon, its really bad.

First I was thinking speaker replacement, then I discovered the sub... so now Im thinking the speakers are probably fine and the sub is just crapped out?

How can I tell which is the problem?

It seems that you have narrowed the issue down to either the sub itself, or the amp powering it. The first thing that I would check is the sub itself.

Spread your fingers and thumb out across the sub cone surface and gently push the cone in and out. The cone should move in and out smoothly with no rubbing feel or grating sound. If you feel any rubbing, or hear and surface-to-surface grating, then most likely your sub is shot and needs replacement.
