So would I be a complete idiot if I started this process over again and just ordered a ‘23? I have a deposit on a Tahoe that was close enough to what I wanted, but all of this waiting time has made me wonder if I should go with the Suburban. Drove one this weekend and the cargo space pretty much won me over. I could build the exact one I want, but I’d be starting from scratch and rolling the dice on whether the chips were available the day my vehicle was coming down the assembly line. Why does buying a new car have to be so dang difficult these days?

The Suburban didn't feel too bouncy to you? I originally was leaning towards a Suburban over the Tahoe until I test drove one. It felt way too bouncy in the back. Perhaps the air ride settings were off if that's possible, but it truly felt like I was driving a long church van! (Which I had to drive once as a loaner vehicle when my Camaro was having warranty work done lol). I never test drove a Tahoe but used to own an older model back in the late 90's and 2000's.

Also, probably a good idea to order a '23 and see which arrives first. I was just about to do that until my Tahoe started moving finally.

Very frustrating been waiting for a truck since November

Ordered my RST 6.2 on October 8th, finally partially built 5/17. Been sitting in Midlothian since then. So at 10 months now since ordering…….but hey at least a ‘23 is about to be delivered to my dealership. And saw a ‘23 LT on another lot. Super psyched about that!

Ordered June of 2021, built in June of 2022, quickly moved to Midlothian, sat there for > month before shipping back to Arlington. Now, that ~26 mile journey took about a month, then suddenly it started showing up on the move to my dealership. In less than 10 days it's made a cross country journey to my dealer and is slated to arrive later this week. Still no VIN, but that's par for the course.

Here's the fun part.. I've been vehicle-less having sold my only car months ago when they told me it shipped the first time. We had a 7,000 mile road trip scheduled for a year, and I bought a used Subaru Ascent the day before the road trip. The first day ON the road trip, I get the text message from my dealer it's finally shipped via rail. So technically, the Suburban will beat me home....

I told GM that I fostered-to-adopt three kids in less time than it took them to build and ship a car... anyone familiar with fostering will realize how pathetic that is.

I don't anticipate these major delays lasting into the 2024 MY. Supply and production capacity are returning to normal for all of GM's competitors as well. The economy is slowing and interest rates are rising so demand will decrease.

the unknown is what business model will the various brands adopt/go back to in the next 12-18 months...as in back to the pre-covid days of lots full and discounts at every dealer or lots have 20% of the ole days and significant discounts can only be had at the random volume dealer who has their stuff together

Agree. I think it depends on the American consumer. I have always factory ordered my cars even back in the day, but if the average consumer wants to see and feel the vehicle before buying, then they're going to gravitate towards the brand that will have more dealer inventory.

But profit is also made on parts and service as well as the sale of the vehicle. If a manufacturer wants to adopt a lean model and keep very low inventory, they may have to accept declining market share compared to a competitor that is willing to carry more dealer inventory. That declining market share translates into less parts and service revenue later on.

In the short term, it appears to be profitable. But over the long run, will that manufacturer get squeezed out of the segment by decreasing sales? I don't know.

it's one thing to forego a sunroof or some other odd option...or buy a LT when you were wanting a RST...but Tahoe vs Suburban?

Granted people have gotten by with far less, heck get yourself a swagger wagon

but if you'll need the space (think i read that you have 3 kids?) then IMO find or order a Suburban. Downside is that you'll never want to "downsize" to a Tahoe if you go with the Suburban...or just get a roof rack and a cargo carrier for your trailer hitch and go with the Tahoe

This is hysterical lol But I’d rather die than give into the minivan. That may be a little dramatic, but you get the idea. I do have 3 little kids and they come with a lot of crap. I think the suburban would definitely be a better fit for us, especially since the price increase is pretty minimal. I’m just scared that I’ll order one and then all of a sudden the Tahoe will be delivered but I’ll be stuck waiting on a vehicle again.

I ordered a '23 a month ago when it was very obvious that newer builds were going straight to dealers and not storage like my '22 order. Dealer said whichever one gets there first will be mine.

Hopefully one of them will get there soon!

I almost spit my coffee out about the church van. Seems like a logical loaner to replace a Camaro lol

I didn’t notice it being bouncy, but then again, I occasionally drive my husband’s Silverado and it felt just like I was driving that. It just looks so much bigger bc the back is enclosed as opposed to being an open bed.

I’m thinking about ordering one and keeping my deposit on the Tahoe. I’m just worried I’ll regret it if the Tahoe comes in first and I ditch the suburban. Decisions, decisions.

Has anyone on this thread had a diesel ship to them in the past month? I’ve seen no movement and every diesel XL unit across the country in transit is already spoken for. Really need mine before fall/winter…

Do another search. I have no idea how it happened but the first dealership I called yesterday (8/9/22) about an XL with a DuraMax with Max tow showing as In Transit said it was available (yeah the sales guy was shocked)! It no longer is as I put a deposit down on it, but there were 15 for me to choose from with 4WD, DuraMax, MaxTow and 2nd row buckets. If you drop MaxTow, you get a lot more options. Mine has a 298 vin with a window sticker and shows as "Pending Dispatch" so don't have a date yet but should be ready to ship with only transport waits.

I've ordered a couple of cars several years ago because the dealer insisted on it. Never took delivery. Being able to visit a dealer and drive off in an in stock vehicle is great but it's tough finding the exact color combo and options you're looking for. Never having to step foot in the dealer and having the car brought to me would be great. But if manufactures moved to an order only system and could have the car delivered in 30-45 days, I wouldn't mind it. 6 months to a year is unbearable. Finances change, needs change, children are born, etc.

Has anyone heard from their dealer that their GM rep is saying all of these vehicles that are sitting and we are waiting on are expected to be shipped out to dealerships by the end of September? I'm waiting on a Yukon Denali that's been in Midlothian for MONTHS and there has been no movement. There are 3 yukons at my current dealership, 2 SLT's and one Black Denali, that I could take today. I'm between the SLT, which is a retrofit for heated seats and is manual 2nd and 3rd row seats. I really don't want to go with the black Denali due to where I live and it would never look clean. Not sure if I should suck it up and keep waiting with fingers crossed that it comes in a month, or suck it up and downgrade for something because i'm sick of playing this game since February......

I sure hope you are right. I haven’t heard this, but I ordered 12/16/21, and has been built and sitting in midlothian since 6/2/22. 8 months :-(

Well I was thinking told by GM today that my 2023 Tahoe which was built 2 weeks ago has been shipped from Arlington to Grand Prairie and now as of today back in Arlington with no eta and waiting to be shipped to dealer

I have had zero luck with GM reps and am so aggravated!! My rep has only “escalated my case to logistics” and my dealer Has the most current and up to date information on my order. There hasn’t been any movement or update in months. Still no window sticker.

Same here, I just checked with my up to date dealer lol. I got stupid excited back in June when it shipped back to Arlington, for it to only sit.....

Wonder if this is related to the strategy of building higher end models, but less overall. Clearly they make more $$ on the high end vehicles (build one Denali vs two base models and make the same or more profit). Building less, but higher end...makes chips available for the back log.
