Just because they fit does not mean they are the same. I have not found other web sites yet that gives all the info but I see that Fram's web site does. For example, 2 Fram filters listed above, 3675 and 9837, are not the same. The 3675 has an "anti-drain back valve" and the 9837 does not. The one they call for my Tahoe, 3506 (small one), has the "anti-drain back valve" so I think the 3675 would be a better match. They also give stuff like metric or standard, and other stuff. I think the other brands probably have the same somewhere, I just remembered this one from when I used to run Fram filters.

The WIX site does show the 51042XP and the 51522XP as the same except for length.

Good to know.

I just looked on AC Delco site and the PF46e and the PF61e had the by-pass valve and both afore mentioned Frams did not. I don't know how many of those Frams I've used in the past, oh well.

51522 will 'work' (for others), but I've never used the lowest tier / basic / no-frills option
(why I don't use Fram - haven't yet figured out their options structure)
Always aiming for better or more if not both ...

Separately, is it a bad thing to have two (redundant) anti-drainback valves?

Does an anti-drainback valve even function as such when the oil filter can is installed upright? Isn't the point to hold the oil in an inverted filter? Asking for a friend...

Thanks for asking; yes, what Fless asked, does an anti-drainback valve do what it says when the oil filter is gravity-fed from above?
Also,

As in, one in the pan plus one in the filter? Asking for myself, but don't see how the answer would not potentially help others.

Just looked at the Wix site and the 51042xp and 51522xp do not have the by-pass valves just like Fram where as the AC Delco do have them. Who opened this rabbit hole anyway, I have things I need to do.:)

Yes, I think you are correct. I first brought up the anti-drain back valve as an example of different internals that you need to consider when changing oil filters. Now I find another difference, the by-pass valve, brand to brand even with numbers that are called for.

By "upright" I meant as they are installed on these engines, with the opening at the top. What good is an anti-drainback valve in this case?

I mean, it's not the same as a Subi boxer engine with the oil filter inverted at the top of the engine. That one needs the valve.
