2009 Tahoe 5.3. 175000 miles. I have owned it for a month and a half and have not heard a single tick. I bought a range device, plugged it in yesterday and drove it to and from work. Loved the subtle differences in how it drove.
However, when I started it cold this morning, I noticed a small tick that lasted about 10 seconds. Any ideas as to why this would have happened? Is the Range device reducing the oil from the top of the motor and causing issues?
I unplugged it for now, so I can check it on cold start tomorrow.
I bought the Range device to try to be proactive and make the motor last many more mile before any ticking developed........ not immediately cause ticking.........

I was just googling about this. Something mentioned it could be piston slap that was masked by the AFM previously? Now that it's disabled, it's noticable?

It won't enable until the engine has been running for 30 seconds, and won't enable in Park/Neutral unless vehicle speed is below 0mph, so I don't think it will enable at all in Park/Neutral..

Probably coincidence..

what doesn't engage, the range device or afm?

has it even been sorted out what commands the range devices are sending out?

I wonder if the hood switch mod would keep it from going into afm and still pass the emissions monitors.

for the op. it's much nicer to have afm turned off in the tune than the add ons. I don't have any idea what command it's sending out to the ecm to keep it from going into afm mode. but since it does keep the emissions monitors from setting. it doesn't seem to crazy to think it's possible piston slap part of the ecm cold start routine doesn't run. but I would have no idea how to test that.

I ended up using the Range yesterday too and then the cold start was totally normal this morning. Who knows, maybe the ticking yesterday morning was totally coincidental........ I will keep monitoring it and see if it does it again.

Take the device out for a few days, see if the ticks is still there. Put it back in and see if anything changes again. Probably an exhaust leak and nothing to do with the Range.

Thanks for your replies guys. Haven't taken the Range device out still. Cold start this morning was completely normal too. No ticking or noises. I am thinking it was just a fluke a few days ago. I will keep an ear open, but at this point I am cautiously optimistic.

I still suspect exhaust leak which sounds exactly like lifters. Sometimes it will reseal after things heat up so it’s more likely to be heard when it’s cold when that’s the case. Nice to hear it’s not there anymore.

When I bought the Tahoe a couple months ago, my friend gave me new plugs for it. I put them in on Friday and WOW what a difference. Feels like a whole new rig! They are the Bosch 9602 (which I have read that people have low opinions about), but they were free and seem to be working fine. With the Range and the new plugs, it's really hard to keep my foot out of it! LOL

I've had a Range Tech for 10 years now and it has electrical issues but never a mechanical one. The rear tailgate won't open or Truck won't start which just unplug and reinstall always fixes it. The data bus gets confused at times. I unplug it every night because it can cause a small battery drain but I won't give it up because I like V8 modes rather than engine issues from lifters. Once a year I let it run in 4 cylinder mode for 2 drive cycles so it will pass emissions in my state then back to V8 mode again. Best money I've ever spent plus I run a custom exhaust which sounds terrible in 4 cylinder mode.
