Inline trans filter

Getting ready to install rebuilt unit. Funds restrictions are keeping me from grabbing a new radiator at the moment. So, I was considering flushing the lines and installing an inline filter coming out for now. Later on I will get a new one and possibly add an external cooler. 3-4 pack looked like they were all steels when I tore it down so I'm definitely trying to mitigate any contaminated from the system.

I put this on about 100,000 miles ago. Has a built-in bypass in case it ever gets plugged.

Currently 174,000 miles, original 6l80 and no issues whatsoever. I changed the spin on filter every other oil change. I still drop the pan every 30,000 and change that useless filter in there. Pan stays really clean, barely anything on the magnet. Lubefiner markets this as an engine oil filter, but the luberfiner rep said it actually cross references for hydraulic systems as well. I have it in the return line coming from the coolers.

I've had a remote spin-on setup on my Toyota auto trans for 15 yrs & 200k miles because it doesn't have a replaceable in pan filter like all my GM auto trannys do (6L80 & two 4L60s).

I change the remote spin-on filter every couple of yrs.

On my GM trannys I change their in pan filter every 50k miles.

A couple feet of hose, transmission or oil cooler line hose.
You'll need two fittings for the filter head to convert to 6AN. 1/2 npt to 6AN male.

Simply use a small tubing cutter and remove the sections of flexible hose in the factory cooler lines. Install a 3/8 compression to 6AN male over each section you cut. Then all you need are a handful of 6AN female fittings for 3/8 push lock hose. (Or you can go with the stainless steel, which takes a little more work making your own hoses.)

Amazon has everything you need. I prefer the brand 'Evil Energy'.... Better quality than the ultra cheap Chinese ones that you'll find. Their website will also walk you through assembling the sections of hoses with their fittings.

While the stainless steel hose looks much better, it's really overkill for the transmission lines. Used it on our H2 Hummer for the engine oil cooler, definitely more difficult to work with. Much larger hose for higher pressure than the transmission cooling lines, with 10AN fittings.

Also makes complete fluid changes quite easy. Simply disconnect one of the AN fittings on the return line. I have a section of hose with a male fitting on it to connect to the line coming out of the cooler, about 5 ft long. I overfill the transmission exactly 4 quarts. Let the engine run until I can see 4 quarts pumped out. Do that four times and you'll see the new fluid coming out. Then just reattach the return line.

Is there any specific reason why you installed this on the return line versus the supply?

It really wouldn't matter. But I went for the return line so when I flush the transmission fluid, I also get to remove everything out of the transmission coolers.

Did you replace the factory torque converter? That would make the biggest difference to transmission longevity.

If you had -6an coming out of the cooler you could “plug and play” with your hose extension setup while still having installed the filter on the supply side correct?
Not that I’m questioning your setup, but rather deciding which method to use, since I have AN connections into and out of the rad and trans cooler.

This is my next project along with a trans rebuild.

Replace the TQ. Its the one definitive failure-point of 6L80s.

If you’re in there replacing it, might as well install the zip kit and rebuild the trans.
