I don’t know what to do.
I have a 2006 Tahoe 5.3.
I had a code for a large evap leak. I replaced the gas cap and I believe the vent valve solenoid. I cleared the light and drove for a couple days. Without checking with my own scanner before going I took my Tahoe to the emissions testing place and failed. They said there weren’t any codes but the I/M readiness was not set. The guy told me to drive for 80-100 miles and bring back in. I drove it for more than 100 miles and checked with my own scanner and it said 2 of the monitors still aren’t ready. I googled it and found something where you start the vehicle and let it idle with the ac and rear defroster on for 2.5 min, then drive it and get up to 55mph and hold that for 3 min then without braking slow to 20mph the go 55mph and hold for 5 min then coast to 20mph again. I just did that today and when I got home I checked with my scanner and still nothing has changed.
I just watched a YouTube video with some guy saying that he disconnected the battery for about 45 min and then just did normal driving for a couple days and all his monitors set. The guy at the emissions testing place told me not to disconnect the battery.
I really don’t know what to do. My plates just expired and it was kind of hard to do the drive cycle. There were too many people driving in front of me or behind me for me to do 55 and hold it and to coast from 55 down to 20.
Has anyone had this same problem??? I really do need some help so I can renew my plates.

Don't disconnect the battery - that will set the monitors to "not ready". The drive cycle should work. Map out a route in advance and then drive it early in the morning so traffic won't delay you

I did the drive cycle again this morning and also drove around quite a bit. When I got home I checked with my scanner and the same 2 monitors still say incomplete. I also scanned it and there aren’t any codes in it so I’m pretty sure there isn’t anymore leaks in the evap system. I really don’t want to bring it into a shop and get charged a ridiculous amount of money for something so stupid.

Which ones aren't ready? In illinois, you only need a certain number and maybe 2 specific ones or something goofy like that. I have passed without readiness.

Here is the Denali as it sits...

Here is the Tahoe with a p0449 code...

Same in Texas - you can pass with one monitor showing not ready.

just go get on the freeway and drive it for an hour @55 or as close you can get to 55, so drive one way for 30 minutes and then drive back the same way. If your plates just expired then generally you have 30 days to get them done if you get pulled over by some VERY slim chance, explain your situation and chances are good you will be allowed to continue without being ticketed. worse case scenario a fix it ticket.

It’s the Evap system and Oxygen sensor heater that aren’t setting

miles or km from last reset? is there any current codes or pending codes? or old codes? this may prevent from being ready..

or don't, the 02 should set if you do what I mentioned above, the evap might take a few tries you will have to drive it and then let it sit and completely cool down then drive it again and warm it up then let it sit and cool down again the evap only operates when the temp is below a specific threshhold @swathdiver I think has the specific temp noted, it has to pass it's self test X amount of times to set. you should be able to pass with one open anyway

The EVAP monitor is a pain in the ass. It requires fuel to be between 1/4 and 3/4 tank, engine cold below 80° (or so) and three cold starts.. I had to change a battery in the middle of a summer here in the high desert and it doesn't get below 80 (or so) until like a month ago so I went for three or four months without being able to reset that stupid evap monitor. Happens every few years when the battery dies in the summer.

There, all fixed for you. Did you realize this emmission test crap is not all of Illinois? (most likely just chicago and maybe some its tree hugging suburbs). I was born and raised in central IL around Decatur area and there hasnt been any emmission testing since i was born....1971.

How you generally fix this is leave the ****** state/city you are in and move to FREEDOM. I am now in Indiana and FREEDOM is great!

158 degrees to run certain tests with scan tool is what I ran into. But then last time, we did them with the motors up to temp so I think other factors were at play as well.

Actually, it's not just Chicago. It's also down in East St Louis. It's a STATE law, that's imposed in certain areas to meet FEDERAL regulations. Don't get me wrong, Chicago politics make me barf. But let's at least use facts.

The Federal Clean Air Act (42 U.S.C. § 7511a) requires states to provide a plan to control air quality in any area that doesn't meet NAAQS standards for ozone IF their state as a whole doesn't meet FEDERAL air quality requirements. They can do that any number of ways. Vehicle emissions testing happens to be a fairly popular one nationwide (32 states). Some states, like Florida, meet the federal air requirements and don't HAVE to do anything, anywhere, if they don't want to. Others, like Massachusetts just blanket test statewide (ANY state, yes even Illinois , could do this if they wanted to).

The point is, it's ultimately a FEDERAL regulation that's being satisfied by state laws one way or another.

If enough people lived in Decatur, Illinois would have to come up with something to show Uncle Sam. Whether that be emmisions testing, requiring you to use an electric tractor, or limiting your herd. On the other hand, if Chicago didn't exist, IL would likely meet federal standards, and unicorns would fart rainbows over all the land.

For free, once every other year, I can manage to keep my CEL off. It's the "safety" inspection states that really have the racket going.
