I feel like I'm on a subscription to heated seat controls

Ok so.... The seat / pedal controls on the door? I don't seem to get along with.

Works fine for a year or 2, then roll into winter and it just goes stupid and stays stupid.

I've tracked it down to moisture and humidity. Seems like rain, humidity, cold weather causes the thing to start activating and triggering key presses on the heated seat (in much the same way rain would interact with the touch screen on your smart phone).

I've had the door apart, checked that no water is dripping onto it or the connectors, checked that weather stripping is good, and re-did the plastic weather shield. All of that checks out. It's the button box itself. I can breathe through the thing and moist it up to cause the thing to act up and replicate behavior.

I have a new one ready to go in. But in the interest of not doing the same thing again and expecting different results.... Howm'st does one water proof the things? Normally I'd go around the clamshell and seal things up with a mix of butyl and dielectric grease. But being that this has physical buttons on it, I can't think of any good ways to properly seal the things and still allow for key press. Conformal coating on the pcb and maybe an anaerobic sealant between the button diaphragm and pcb? Attach a heating strip to it so it self-dries?

Any y'all have a known good fix.... Or, and I acknowledge I'm just getting the cheap switches from doorman.... A known good switch that's less fussy about environmental conditions and can tolerate getting wet (windows down, rain... Wet...)

@SnowDrifter

Had random heated seat activation on my 03 Z71. Heated seat gremlin would manifest itself after a rain.

Finally tracked it to the front frame ground on the drivers side.

Removed, cleaned, greased and tightened. No further issues.

Might be something worth checking…
to rule it out.

As a former electronic tech, I was impressed of your suggestions re: conformal coating, etc., , as these were going to be my responses. I think @dps01 is on to something, as I find most of my gremlins were associated with grounds, until I went Big 3.

I have to agree. Wonky grounds cause lots of weird issues.

No kidding?

That's wild. I'll definitely check that! Once uhh.... It's not absolutely pouring rain. Ack!

Another thing I have experienced is that dust will get on the door circuit board. Then when you have water or humidity, you get the same results. Might try cleaning the board. I've hear of people putting a coating on it, but I don't know anything about coating them.

Cleaning grounds didn't get me anywhere

Had a spare seat heater switch I tossed in. Improved, but not solved.

So I'd be what... Turning my attention to the master window switch as a potentially 2-factor contribution to this?

Some poking around led me down a rabbit hole if maybe it would need to be programmed if replaced, or maybe not. But then that goes into tech 2 stuff and maybe other subscription software? I'm fighting Google on this one. Can't seem to key in what I need to get answers given that these rigs are starting to age out. Yech....

So I suppose my next path is the following?

1. Remove driver master window switch, see if I can pull it apart, clean PCB. Inspection of plugs revealed no signs of corrosion, so I'd need to get at the board

2. Tech 2 plus other software? Not clear on that bit. And the tech 2 market is.... Well I can't tell my look alikes vs. functional apart here. Could use guidance

3. New switch and program

4. Predictably warm butt?

The master window switch (in the driver's door panel, with the window controls and the lock switch, power mirrors, etc.) is technically called a Driver Door Module (DDM). A new one -- unless otherwise stated in the sales documentation -- would require subscription programming so that the functions work for your VIN. It's not the VIN that gets programmed into the switch, but the options that are associated with the VIN. A used donor part with the same options would not require programming. Rock Auto has new ones listed under "Door Lock Switch." Your existing DDM might even have an updated calibration, but the only way to tell is to know which one it has now, and then to check the GM programming to see if there is one.

But I'm not sure the DDM has anything to do with the seat heater switch -- have you looked at any wiring diagrams to see if there's a connection? (pun intended...)

EDIT: the DDM apparently does connect to the seat heater switch:

EDIT #2: have you carefully checked the wiring harness that goes from the door to the kick panel? Wires in that bundle tend to get compromised over all these years.

The wires in the door or the little rubber encased dingus bit that goes between door and body?

I didn't trace everything through the door, but what I could easily see and access looked OK. I'm a little skittish with the rubber encased bit going between door and body (I can never get those things apart) but opening the door and firmly massaging / manipulating the bundle didn't seem to have any effect.

Though I did note if I crank the defrost on high, the issue improves as the temperature rises. I suppose a roundabout diagnosis could be directing a heat gun to parts / areas piece-wise to see which improves the symptoms and go from there?

Finally got a gap in the rain

Yeesh

Anyways, harness between door and body looks in good condition. No chafing of wires or moisture ingress

Can you meter the power going to all the parts? You might have dirty power/not enough power flowing through.

Ok so

I noted a bit of corrosion one one of the PCB components. But anyways, new DDM seems to have it all sorted

Programming not needed when matching pedals, folding mirrors, etc
