This is good example of why troubleshooting on new vehicles under warranty should be left to the dealer as there many things that are new and unexpected and out of the realm of possibility.

Infact, I think the dealer finally put 2 and 2 together only because the recall is out and the P0016 code has a meaning in these era of vehicles, else they were pretty clueless as well.

Anyway.. all well that ends well. Glad you got it fixed

But the scary part is this is not a 6.2l but a 5.3l with some of the very similar bearing issues that the 6.2l has been having.

Makes me want to move to 5W-30 asap but not going to until the warranty ends. If the 5.3 goes down, I’ll enjoy the “newer isn’t always better” discussion with wife but hoping I never have to have that discussion

Trying to get an idea with sasso is located. Need to understand if hoy climate and high temps are factoring into this 5.3l failure.

Probably also need to know what typical highway speeds are where he is located.

@sasso,

Thanks for the response.

The 2.5 hours on the highway make sense when the engine bearings would have tightened up.

The shorter trips probably did not cause the bearings to heat up as much to be a problem.

You were clearly borderline for the engine actually seizing while you were on a longer highway run.

Can you clarify "i have done about 36k kms when it happened and the engine was replaced not long after. maybe 100kms."

Did the problem start to occur at 36k kilometers (22369 miles)?

Are you saying you had the problem on and off and finally had the engine replaced at 100k kms (62137 miles)?

Where are you located? Just trying to get an idea of the climate you are dealing with on a regular basis.
Sorry, i could have phrased it better.

Issue occurred at 36k kms and engine replaced at 36.1k kms.

So i went on a camping trip, 2.5 hours there 2 days camping and 2.5 hours back, reach the road to my place and it dies.

I am located in the middle east.

highway speed are between 120km/h to 160 km/h depending on how far from the city you are. the road i drove on the way back i was averaging 140km/h on the highway

Middle east -- Yes that's real heat ... I can see 0W-20 being a little on the not enough side in peak summer. Maybe go up to 5W-30 or even 0W-40?

@sasso I can see why you had poor dealer access and had to take matters into your own hands. I apologize for the misunderstanding.

By the way, what was the ambient temp when this happened? I assume your weather is similar to Dubai, if so, maybe it was between 25C - 35C peak temperature since it appears to be in March or April ?

Yeah, extremely similar to Dubai ;). I think temps were around 38C when it happened. But it not the first summer the car is seeing. also the last oil change was at 30k kms.

Yes dealer access here is horrible, we have only 2 and to top it off when the problem first occured all our other cars were due for repairs/oil change so it was a massive pain.

The dealer local to my city is next to useless. Had to take it the other dealer and in a couple of days they diagnosed and ordered the new engine assembly. Huge props to them.

Imagine, the dealer local to me wanted to void my warranty because of off road lights i had installed.

Unfortunately every summer could be worse due to incremental wear accumulation.

The 6.2L engine is involved in a recall now and the recommended oil is now 0W-40.

You may want to consider 5w-30 due to extreme heat.
