Did you remove your roof rack completely? Let's see it!

Hey all,

Toying around with the idea of deleting the roof rack altogether. I'm currently back to the factory rack without the cross members (it almost disappears on my black truck now), and am considering have it disappear completely. (Drummer's ride is partially responsible for this! LOL)

Anyway, I'd want to cover the holes with something akin to those black rubber strips you see on some SUV's roofs (the strips that keep things from sitting directly on the sheet metal). I've heard of people doing this, but I haven't seen pics of it. I'd like to find strips with finished, maybe tapered ends.

Anyone have pics of your method of covering the roof mounting holes? And anyone have idea on where to find some strips with finished ends? Thanks!

Plug the holes with sealant and cover the area where the rack was with a stick-on body molding that matches the color of the truck.

Thanks for the response, Jim -- but if you read my post, you'll see that that's exactly what I want to do, but that I'm not sure where to find the molding with finished ends. I don't want a cut end on either end. I'd like to make it look like if was from the factory. So, I need something with tapered, finished ends, but don't know where to find them just yet. Thanks!

I didn't know when you referred to strips that was what you meant. If you get them solid the color you want, cut them to a taper and heat the ends to smooth out the edges they could look like factory molded ends with some practice.

Just get some GM interior plugs

A buddy of mine did this with his tahoe and everything is fine, take these and put a little silicone in the hole, push this down in there. Take some masking tape and tape the piece down (until the silicone solidifies), remove the masking tape and you'll never know they were there. Or do it right and have the holes welded closed and have the roof repainted.

those are actually headliner pins, it was just a reference number. But do you know what plugs I'm talking about....like the ones that hold a door panel on and shit....

I've been running mine for 2yrs. with the rack off and a molding covering the holes. The molding I got came with tapered ends(4 of them) and is made by ProStripe, I do not remember the part number, but know I have it written down somewhere as I just did a nbs tahoe a few months ago.

Did you have to apply tape to it, or does it come with it already?The tape is already applied to the molding Is it relatively rigid and did it go on easily, or is it really pliable, requiring a lot of effort to line it up straight?It is relatively rigid, you will need to divot the bottom where it goes over where your original bolts were, easily done with a drill bit, or deburring tool.

Awesome. Now about there "where do I get this stuff?" part... Did you ORDER it from that shop, or did they have it there? I'd love to see it in person, first. If you can give me the name of the store where you purchased it, then I can see if I have that store (or something like it) here in PA.
