Bored, so I took apart my old 6.2

It is the aluminum 6.2 non AFM with VVT.
I thought about it yesterday and today. Think i'll do a refresh on it with what ever cam @swathdiver liked in his so this will lead to some questions!
I haven't replaced a camshaft yet but was looking at the Gwatney LLT1 VVT. Others on here have actually replaced their cams like Michael and Dave and... @petethepug @Geotrash @donjetman @mikeyss

The TSP VVT-1 is a nice upgrade, but I wouldn't want the next stage up. Mine has a nice lope, and the street manners are still pretty good. You may want to step up your torque converter with this cam, I'm using a triple disc and I think it's 2600 stall.

Spareparts, your thoughts are on track, most want more performance but want it without the lopey idle that hot rodders love. GM always stayed conservative with cam selections and GM cams work well. Even on the higher performance engines for the Corvette. Some just love hearing the lope, I get that but I prefer a cam that offers a near stock idle and good all around performance. Call me a sissy if you wish.

Then call me a sissy too. I like a smooth idle with plenty of grunt behind the go pedal.

Oh sorry, Maybe im thinking @Geotrash
I did replace the cam in my 2012 Yukon XL Denali. Three times in fact, owing to cheap lifter trays sold to me as genuine GM. Once I got real GM trays, no more problems. I have the Cam Motion Stage 2 truck cam and I love it. Smooth idle but you can tell it’s not stock. Great power throughout the rev range. It’s a 3-bolt cam so no VVT, but I don’t miss it at all. Truly. And I have an ‘07 with the L92 to compare it with that still has VVT. The 2012 is a more enjoyable drive.

Thank you. I remember reading all that and you stating you really liked that cam.
I'm not really into hot rodding anymore but i do sometimes go WOT for fun and sometimes tow a 6K trailer so i think we have similar use with like vehicles.

thats one dirty looking *****--were you burning molassass in it? lol Couple years ago I had a sticking lifter in a 5.7 with 115,000 on it. Needing a hobby I figured it was worn and put it on a stand then without any checking at all started to rapidy tear it down as far as could be done just to look at all the stuff then junk it.. Whipped the heads off, turned it upside down and took out all the guts, mostly at night when I had spare time and didnt have a great light. Hmmm, I thought---this looks pretty good, then I got a machinest/mechanic buddy to come over. AFter measuring and inspecting he said "Why did you tear down a new engine?" I had always used synth and changed it often. The engine was virtually wearless. I, like a dope, hadnt considered using ANYTHING from the thing and didnt take any care while tearing it down, ruining it all. Now at age 71 I have 5 engines all on stands including a 2002 LS1. They have been setting for 4 years lol. Arthritis got me. Anyone wanna buy some 3800 V6s out of firebirds?

Thinking on this some more, I also changed the torque converter at the same time. It has the same stall as stock, but a billet cover, flanged hub, and stronger lockup clutch. It hooks up fast and there's no slop in it, which I think is partly why it's so enjoyable to drive. My wife likes her little Land Rover, but when she has to travel for work, she'll take the 2012, given the choice. She thinks it's a beast.

I haven’t replaced the cams but did get into the lifter valley when the cover plate was leaking.

A trunnion kit is on my mind as I approach 200k.
