I'm not sure what you are trying to address with your response. Incase it is me, please let me clarify: I will not be installing a security system myself. I was asking for recommendations from members as to what they chose, how much it cost, and if that included installation or not. You did remind me that I need to ask why they chose what they chose, and if turned out to be as good as they thought (or not)...

I went with the directed viper, directed bought out the big brand names years ago, clifford, avital, viper, etc and they market them under the various brand names, but under the cover's they all operate basically the same and various add-on modules will work with them all since they share the same "brain" called a d-ball interface.
you can save a little bit by purchasing the system and modules online and then just have a authorized dealer install it. all directed systems come with a lifetime warranty as long as it was installed by a authorized dealer.
all that being said I paid around $1000.00 installed, the (optional) 4g & gps service has a annual subscription which is approx $100. you can save $20-30 by purchasing a 3yr subscription.

so the question is after that: is it worth it? for me yes, every dam time they broke into my truck they ****** shit up so bad I had to take it to the dealer, on top of that most insurance company's will not cover aftermarket radio's or other stereo equipment, and unless you have receipts for anything else they may have took then you are simply ass-out.

Thanks for the detailed information. In terms of the "is it worth it", it was more along the lines of "did it work as you had anticipated?" I agree with everything you said, and really appreciate your response!

Unfortunately, the defense lawyers would eat you alive. Insufficient warning, reckless endangerment, etc. They'd own your Tahoe, you, and everything you owned to that point. Y'all have heard the story of the burglar that fell through a sj=kylight and successfully sued the homeowners for his injuries, right?

So, an update. After 2-3 hours working on the ignition cylinder, I finally got it sort of functional, enough I could drive it the shop I usually use for bodywork. Although, I was really wondering if they were right for this job (they aren't). The freaking dash looked like a Christmas tree with all the warning lights and messages. ABS, TCS, Stability, 4WD, HVAC not working, in D it would only use 3rd gear. using the gear selector I could get 2nd, no 1st or 4th at all. I've got an appointment to drop it off with the dealer in the morning, since they're probably the best option to fix all of this. Hopefully, this is all resets and calibrations with their computer, but maybe the morons fried some modules trying to get past the PassLock.

I don't know but I got tired of mine getting broke into so
I had the viper 2-way alarm installed
then I added the 4g interface that also has a real gps antenna
glass break sensor
tilt sensor
hood pin
a scanning led inside on the center console
a high decibel interior alarm speaker

there is really no way around it they would have to be a super ninja
if the alarm is triggered, it sounds the horn, alarm speaker, interior speaker, text's me, email's me, the viper phone app sounds a alarm on my phone, my phone vibrates, the key fob (good for up to a mile range) sounds a alarm and vibrates.

it appears that just having the scanning led's inside indicating the vehicle is alarmed is deterrent enough because it hasn't been broken into since

if I was car jacked and I didn't managed to kill them first I can track it online until they find the modules and yank it out or disconnect the battery.

to get around most basic alarms they like to break a rear window and climb inside, get what they came for and climb back out the rear window never triggering the alarm. hence the reason for adding the glass sensor.

Hope you don’t get any false alarms! Sheesh.

I was at first with the Silverado when it was installed the tilt sensor had come loose and was sitting crooked so it would go off randomly, had some minor issues with the yukon at first also, I think that had to do with the tilt sensor also. The tilt sensor is designed to be installed horizontal with the vehicle when it is installed vertical it doesn't work right.
there is a optional motion sensor you can get also, that one is a pia I put one in the 03 Silverado and anytime the kids walked by the truck it would go off hard to get it set properly

I was just going to post about this.. been thinking... The more I do to my Yukon, the more I think I need to get Lojack or something for it. Probably should do an alarm and Lojack. I know it’s spendy but worth it, as long as the PD doesn’t get defunded [emoji35][emoji2959][emoji35][emoji2959] that’s the thing. It depends on tour PD support to locate..

I'm an electrical engineer, and I was talking with another EE friend of mine today about it. So we spent some time cooking up ways to electrify the door handles. I also have an electrophysiology background, so we were thinking hit them hard enough at the right frequency so that their arm muscles would lock and they wouldn't be able to let go, and keep it going as long as the battery held out. Then they would still be there getting jolted when you came out to the car and you could just turn them over to the police. Case closed.

I had someone break into my Mitsubishi truck in the early '90s. Busted out the door lock with a screw driver. He just stole my stuff -- didn't try to steal the car. Pasadena PD saw a bum walking through a part with a laptop and a leather jacket. They arrested him and found me because the computer bag had magazines with my name and address on them. He went to jail.

His attorney, apparently, tried to play tricks with the system, to keep him out of jail. Except I kept taking the day off, and showing up at the courthouse.

For those of you with nice security systems for your rigs, may I ask what you chose, what your cost was, and if it included installation? I am not as mechanically inclined as some of you.

Of my two trucks, my '03 Sierra Denali suffered the most. When we found it, you could no longer move the gear selector, and the key would not turn in the ignition cylinder. Once we got it to our mechanic -- it didn't look like we needed any body work either -- he pointed out the dash was also lit up like a Christmas tree, but he really expected that to be due to the jacked up ignition cylinder. Finally, between the time it left my house and the time it arrived at the mechanic, the rod that actuates the door latch had come loose; the driver's door would no longer open. The mechanic also discovered the thief had broken the door handle with his screwdriver.

My Silverado seems to have suffered the least. The doors locks are a loss, but the doors seem to still work, and the key still turns. I'll know better after I get it to the mechanic, but I opted to wait for the repairs on the Sierra to be complete before turning over the Silverado; we have 3+ drivers and are down to the Suburban, my mother's car, and this Silverado.

On the plus side, repair was authorized yesterday at about 2 PM Central. Unfortunately, my mechanic doesn't think he'll have it done until next week, though.

FWIW, this is the mechanic that has done almost all the maintenance on all my vehicles for the last 6+ years. So at least he knows my vehicles.

Went to Singapore on a business trip in 2000. While there, I happened to be in a position to help stop a theft but it required a bit of 'aggressive force' to help apprehend the thief. Police took me in the car to the police station and I'm sitting thinking about how I'm gonna be sued and/or booked for assault...or worse. Kept running through my head that I should have done nothing.

...until they take my info at the station and hand me the equivalent of $55 USD for helping stop a crime, and give me a ride back to the office I was working at with a solid handshake and smiles of gratitude for my help. It was wonderful.

Don't count on the police. I had my 74 Opel GT 1900 broken into and they got the stereo. Then vandalized the interior pretty bad. I guess they were expecting more and were frustrated there just wasn't anything else. I got it so my wife & I had something to drive while I rebuilt here 74 Super Beetle Convertible. Anyway, I only had No-Fault on it. The cops finally show up and take the report, but the cop says they know who is doing all the break-ins in the area. I say, "Great! Let's go get my stuff back!" He calmly says, "I'm just here to file a report so you will have something to give to your insurance agent". I tell him, "I just have No-Fault" He looks at me and slams his book shut and tells me, "WHY ARE YOU WASTING MY TIME THEN!" and storms off.

Needless to say the little bastards stole everything from every vehicle within a few miles, then started breaking into homes. They made a bad choice when they picked my elderly neighbor's house. The neighborhood was awakened by screaming and yelling. It sounded like someone was getting murdered! The little punks couldn't get the chain lock off the door, so my neighbor started hitting the bastard's hand with an old cast iron skillet. She got several good whacks in, but the bastard wouldn't stop. So she went to her Butcher Block, where she keeps all her knives, picks out a big, sharp one and stabs the bastards hand and pins it to the wall. Blood is all over the place, but he hears the sirens coming and pulls his hand away from the knife, slicing his hand in half. It was great! We chased him down, which was easy due to all the blood loss. The cops call an ambulance and they take him away. The cops start mentioning possible charges against my neighbor and we all go absolutely bonkers on them. In short, we just reminded them that if they had been doing their job, and picked these bastards up months ago, we wouldn't be going through this right now...WOULD WE!

The cops left and we all ended up doing shots until the sun came up. Then we barbecued some pig and drank beers for the rest of the day. Hope your ordeal has a happy, and not as twisted, ending as mine.

P.S. My elderly neighbor was quite the drinker. She must have had a hollow leg!
