I did a search in regards to AFM and found a lot of posts. I could not find any that used a tune to cancel/ modify the AFM. We bought the wife a new Yukon and she is stating the V4 switch to V8 is a firm shutter. From cruising 40-45 mph to a stop light. I have not driven the truck in a couple weeks, so I am going off her statements. Can I modify/ cancel the AFM and will it effect MPG that much? I have a feeling that AFM does not save the 6.2 that much gas.
Thank you!

I wish we could select either 4 or 8 cyl mode all the time.
4cyl for city amd 8 cyl for towing or hauling people.

Skippy,
I don't know what year your truck is, but is your AFM shutter getting better or worse?

Burb,
Do you have any experience with modifying the AFM?

I have a 2010 denali with 9450 miles. I cant say one way or the other, bc im sensitive on the throttle, i can always tell/ feel it. Its obviously more noticeable going from 4 to 8 then vice versa.

Burb, are u telling me, wthat ith a black bear tune, i can select how many cylinders i wish to use manually?

I'm not sure about Black Bear, but I do know that with HP Tuners my tuner was only able to adjust throttle percentage for when AFM turned on/off. We played with a bit and didn't really notice any difference, so I went back to the stock settings.

One thing to consider before messing around with the AFM is the engine oil consumption issue these trucks seem to be having. IMO, it's solveable by turning off the AFM and just running as a V8 all the time.

How much mpg loss in the V8 mode only (AFM off)? Why does it burn oil?

BB shut mine off as part of my tune ... I lost very little efficiency because of the road conditions I drive in most of the time, but if you do a lot of highway driving on flat roads then the difference will be more significant.

soulsea,
So do you get 10-12 mpg ish? Its nothing bad like 8 mpg?!

So Burb,
You do have experience. Give up your reasons why you prefer shutting off the AFM. Do you have a difference in mpg with the AFM off?

11-12 is exactly where I usually end up ... 90% city driving, 4cyl disabled, and 22s.

Thats not bad considering our Yukon gets 12mpg in the city on stock tune/ 20in. wheels. The wife does hit the freeway 40 miles one way for work. Hope this new tune doesn't hurt the fuel to much!

Norman it really depends what kind of tune you want.

BB does tunes tailored to mpg, towing, performance, octane rating, shift points, etc ... you basically tell them what you're trying to achieve and they tailor a tune to your needs.

In my case, the clumsy denali transmission was driving me nuts hesitating/bogging down between 1 > 2 > 3, so everything was first and foremost to remedy that, then to get the most out of my engine with 93 octane fuel, mpg wasn't a priority although I was pleased that it didn't drop much ... but like I said, talk to them and they'll tell you what is possible and what you can expect.

They're good people.

Serge,
Thanks for the reply! You are right, I suppose someone buying a 6.2 V8 probably doesn't need to get 30mpg! So it might be the AFM shutter in combination with the sloppy shifting? I believe you about the "good people" comment. I have ordered an exhaust from them (very helpful). I just thought there would be more custom tune consumers that would chime in. I have seen a lot of aftermarket tuning in peoples signatures.

I have a 2011 Denali XL and never notice when it switches between 4 and 8. I'd take it back to the dealer.

The sloppy shifting is a common issue for all the 6 speed/6.2L vehicles that are 07+. I have that issue on my escalade and can't wait for a BB tune in my area.

I read one of those tech notices from a search. GM will not do any warranty work for the AFM.
