4l80e shifter to valve body disconnect

This is the third time ive found the shifter came unconnected from the valve body piston. I need to figure out how to keep them together.

I dont know how my valve body became disconnected from the shifter but now i assemble and fill and test and all gears are neutral. I at least had some forward motion before. Need to research what could be wrong
