Brought my 22 Z71 Suburban to the dealer this morning. 43,2XX Miles.

Got a call from the advisor just now. Said they needed to do the 45K service, even though this morning I asked for just a LOF and tire rotation after stating my miles and at which he agreed. I asked how much and he said $2,700 and change before tax. That's $3K for a 45K service. This seems extremely expensive, but maybe I'm out of touch. What say you?

“45K Mile Service” is pretty generic. Did the dealership detail what all was included?
What filters?
What fluids?

I would check your owners manual for service intervals and see what all items are needed at 45K miles.

Items like cabin filters are $15-$20 from a local parts store, dealer is charging you $35-$40 for that filter. Watch a how-to online video, and a simple hand tool and before you know it 10 mins later you just saved $150-$200 compared to what the dealer is charging you.

Has anyone found a really reputable place to do transmission fluid changes, et cetera, besides the dealer? Many people complain that the dealer doesn't know what he's doing, but then I don't trust generic transmission/auto repair shops either. Is there any good way to ascertain or know that this is getting done properly? Money is not necessarily the issue, but I don't like getting ripped off either.....

Look at the Severe service schedule of the manual and base it off that. At the 50k mark you are due for oil change, transmission service, transfer case fluid change, I'd recommend both diffentials (especially the front), maybe an air filter, and possibly a carbon removal treatment.

If you are handy, all of the above can be done on a Saturday in your garage for about $300 - $400 worth of filters and fluids. Buy a good vacuum extractor from Harbor Freight and it'll make some of these a dream (rear diff and transmission).

I would ask for a detailed breakdown of what services are being performed, otherwise 3k is kinda rapey

I would trust a transmission shop to do a transmission service more than any dealer given that that’s a transmission shop’s specialty…

It is true that with most EVs there is little maintenance, but the rest of what you said is questionable or at least I have questions about it.

Seems high. I usually pay about $350 for Trans fluid and filter on my 17 at the dealer.

Oil change is $130 and I had the rear diff done before I blew it up for $200.

So main 3 fluids at the dealer would run under $1k for me and that's in NJ.

Yes, I have 3 mechanics that I frequent.

I use the Chevy dealer for my maintenance on fluids (oil, trans, coolant, rear, etc)

And I use 2 local mechanics for the performance and "gremlin removal" services if its beyond what I can do in my driveway.

Depends on what they're doing and where you live.

If this is a real Z71, then you have a transfer case and both differentials and of course the transmission, and they are all ready for their fluids to be changed.

I paid $175 for 4 gallons of Dexron VI fluid back in November and I believe you'd pay at least twice that to service your transmission.

You can save a lot of money if you do it yourself. If your time is more valuable than crawling around under the truck, let them do it.

On a slightly unrelated note, the new 2.7L 4cyl turbomax engines are pretty sick.

I don't know if I like them in a full size truck, but the mid-size Colorado/Canyon platform it seems to work pretty well... 310hp and 430 lb/ft torque on 87 octane (recommended).

I think they need more power/a tune coming from a 6.2, but I mentioned that in the Colorado/Canyon forums and about got my face ripped off suggesting the truck would wake up with a tune LOL

They are build like a diesel, handle 27psi of boost stock, but I am curious to see long term longevity. I want to swap an LS into the new Canyon AT4X platforms but I think I'd quickly give up trying to get the electronics to work.

Oh, I'm sure they are capable and all that. Hell, that thing has more power/torque than half ton trucks of not too long ago. I still think it's blasphemy to have that in a full-size truck, but I'm just an old geezer who thinks trucks need to come with a V8 is all. :Big Laugh:

Luckily GM just hasn't tried putting one in a full-size SUV. At least not yet... And the person I quoted suggesting what he did sounds odd at best.

I think at 33 I can still call myself a young gun?! lol but I’m with you…. Full size trucks need V8s! lol put the turbo 4bangers in the Colorado/canyon, and the compact crossover SUV. Lol keep the half ton trucks and big SUVs with a V8!
