Hey All, I am approaching 45k miles and getting ready for some driveline service. I have towed my boat for about 9000 of the current 40k, so not looking to be talked out of performing this maintenance. I like to be prepared, I called my dealer yesterday and was told this for a quote:
-Driveline Service: $420 (front diff fluid drain and refill, rear diff drain and refill, transfer case drain and refill. I have the eLSD rear end). This seemed in the ballpark
-Transmission Service: $1100 (drop pan, drain fluid, change filter, new pan gasket, put pan back. They said 3.5 hour job). This seems sky high compared to my 2013, where same service was like $219.

What are others seeing for Transmission Filter and Fluid change? The Transmission service seems really high.

This is the problem with the V8 engines and the transmission pan, see first picture below. The exhaust cross over pipe from the drivers side runs directly below the transmission pan and required the drivers side Pre-Cat O2 sensor to be removed and the front exhaust needs to be disconnected at the manifolds to drop down enough to get the trans pan out past the exhaust cross over. It may be possible just drop the exhaust the length of the studs and try to pry the exhaust down, but it is not worth the hassle. The exhaust has a flex joint after the "Y" comes to a single pipe and it is fairly flexible. Just need to drop the front of the exhaust down about 3 inches and the trans pan will clear.

The filter stupid expensive, around $107 list price, I do not recall the exact price I paid, I think it was around $70. The gasket is reusable, but is probable around $70 list price. Fluid would not be to expensive because you will only get about 5 quarts out dropping the pan, but GM charges about $12 per quart, the best pricing I have seen is on Rock Auto and a 12 quart pack on my doorstep was $80.61 shipping and tax for $6.72 per quart of AC Delco ULV transmission fluid. But the dealer quoting $1100 is also way out of line. I pulled my valve body and installed the NextGen valve body upgrade kit with the truck up on ramps in the driveway, I could probably drop the exhaust and change the fluid and filter on by back sliding back and forth under the car in about 2 to 2 1/2 hours. The dealers is quoting from a flat rate labor time guide would be my guess?? I would search out a really good independent to do this trans service and install an aftermarket pan like I did. I would probably also steer clear of national transmission chains as well like AAMCO, they will likely screw you as well. The PPE holds 2 1/2 more quarts of fluid. Just make sure you get the proper pan because if has to clear the exhaust, the pan for the 6 cyl Diesel and some of the non 4WD trucks does not clear the exhaust. The PPE trans pan was right close to $300 for the proper pan to clear the exhaust on the 1500 V8 4WD vehicles.

The correct PPE transmission pan with the clearance for the exhaust cross over pipe on the V8 1500 4WD trucks is PPE#128051300. Be careful when searching, the PPE#128051200 is not the correct pan. The descriptions are a bit poor. I think the 10L1000 "Allison" transmission has a large pan perimeter and it does not have exhaust clearance and there may be the similar pan with a slightly different part number PPE#128051100 without the exhaust clearance that will work for the 6 cylinder Diesel in these trucks.

Since you tow, I HIGHLY suggest you get an aftermarket trans pan like the PPE unit with a drain plug so you can easily drain the fluid without dropping the exhaust. The older the vehicle, the more chance to break and exhaust stud!

Setting the transmission fluid level is critical and there is SO MUCH BAD INFORMATION OUT THERE ABOUT HOW TO DO IT AS WELL AS THE GM PROCEDURE SUX AND IS SUPER DANGEROUS TO THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND THE PERSON FILLING THE TRANSMISSION. If the valve body is not removed, the cooling circuit does not drain and setting the level without a modified valve body will be easy. No need to raise the transmission temperature to over 175F by power braking/brake torqueing and getting the exhaust cross over pipe cherry red. ALSO THE FLUID LEVEL MUST BE FINALIZED WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, IGNORE ANYTHING ELSE ANYONE TELLS YOUR OR WHAT YOU READ.

I would also recommend installing a heat shield on the exhaust cross over pipe because this pipe is Post Cat and can get stupid hot and turn red under heavy loading and transfer this heat back into your trans fluid. See 2nd picture.

Suggest you look over this thread of mine for more info - https://www.tahoeyukonforum.com/thr...peed-valve-body-kit-finally-installed.153898/

Fun with numbers for a trans service based on some stupid numbers unless the dealer is charging $200/hr!

3 1/2 hours @ $150/hr = $525
Trans Filter @ $125
Pan Gasket @ $75
7 qts of fluid @ $15 = $105 probably only need 5

Total IMHO Highballing It = $830

If the dealer charges $200/hr then you are at $1,005 + tax which gets you to your $1100.

Driveline --- I think you can hold off for a bit more ..... unless you ran through heavy dirt/water.. (but sounds like you want to go ahead with it if its reasonable)
Transmission ---- can the dealer perform a flush instead ? (ignore filter for now) not sure what the factory manual wants

and how heavy is the trailer + boat ?

Well there you go, this is why I perform most of all my own work. I clearly do not make over $800k a year to keep up with these rates!! I cannot afford $200/hr at inflated labor times, I might as well do the work myself, because I can just make believe I am getting paid $200/hr.

I can see people not servicing these transmissions because it is more cost effective to rebuild them than change the fluid!! If you changed the fluid 3 times over its life at these and at increasing rates, you might as well start a savings account and just put the money into a rebuild fund when the transmission fails or just dump the vehicle at year 3 or 4 and skip the service.

A few challenges.

1. The 10 speed does not have a dipstick or dipstick tube.

2. The side fill port would be very difficult to snake a small hose in, if you could you might get 3 quarts of fluid out.

3. You probably cannot perform a fluid exchange on the gasoline 10 speeds because they have a cooling loop thermostat that is in the top of the valve body. The thermostat does not open until around 170F. Not sure it can act like a check valve and allow fluid flow past the thermostat when it is closed.

4. The Diesel version transmissions have an external cooling loop thermostat so you could probably remove and disconnect at the external cooling loop thermostat to connect a fluid exchange machine.

5. The older the vehicle and depending on the climate you have more of a chance to break exhaust manifold studs if you do plan on dropping the exhaust to perform a fluid and filter change. Broken exhaust studs just increase the price of the fluid and filter change by 2-3 more hours!!

Starting to look like lifetime fluid for some owners!!!

I do a bi-annual fluid flush though the dipstick tube.
yeah I did the same on our 2018.. it was convenient....

I have no idea why they couldn't have added a simple dipstick..... except making it harder to service. They have been trying to dumb it down for the user. (No more manual transmissions on HD trucks for that matter as people can dump the clutch while towing apparently)

Boat is 4500lbs, probably half the towing miles were also with a loaded up truck for the annual fishing trip. Manual says severe service interval is 45k for transmission and xfer case. I’m going to do the maintenance. There is actually a TSB out on trans flush from GM, the net is GM says don’t. Probably because of what @jfoj said above about the cooling loop t-stat.

That's why the PPE Trans Pan is nice - In addition to the large capacity and cooler running temp, it has a drain plug.

Something is expensive. What can be done there for $ 1000, I do not know. Changing the oil in the automatic transmission takes 2-2.5 hours. Ford Morocraft oil goes there at a price of $ 20 per quart, 8 quarts. Filter and Gasket $ 200. Yes, it is difficult to dismantle the exhaust pipe, but this is not difficult. I change the automatic transmission fluid and in the rear limited-slip clutch every 30 thousand miles, because I have a difficult operating mode.

I did the diffs and t-case myself in my garage, so cost of fluid only.

I paid a local transmission shop to do pan service on my 2021 Yukon 5.3L - 10speed. This service drops the pan, replaces the filter, new pan gasket and tops off with fresh fluid, it cost me $250.

I did all this when I got my Yukon, it had around 63,000 miles on it. My 10 speed is very smooth and responsive. Haven't had any issues with it at all.

T-Case Procedure

Front Diff Procedure

Rear Diff Procedure

But don't you have a Diesel? Easy pan drop on the Diesel no need to drop or exhaust.

I would like to see what they charged you for parts alone.

The OE filter, gasket and fluid list price is $250.

They could have cheated on the gasket because it is reusable under most conditions, this would have saved close to $75. The filter is stupid expensive for these transmission, assume they could have put a bottom shelf filter and saved money.

I would verify the work was performed at that price or they ate a lot on the job.

I would check and see if they actually dropped the exhaust. On a 2021 I would be a bit worried about getting the exhaust flange nuts loose after 4-5 years without heat. Additionally they would have to removed the drivers side O2 sensor to access one of exhaust flange nuts.

It may be possible they just dropped the pan, figured out the exhaust needed to be removed, sucked out what fluid they could from the pan and reinstalled it and topped the fluid up without replacing the filter or gasket. You could replace the gasket, but it would be tough to get it out around the valve body and filter with the pan up against the exhaust cross over.

I know what is involved because I have performed pan removal on my 2024.

Sometimes some things are too good to be true.

I'm not that suspicious. It's a shop that I've used multiple times on various vehicles for transmission services. They use OEM filters and OEM fluid. If they reused the gasket...meh its a metal core gasket that can be reused.

My Yukon is southern owned, the underside is immaculate. The bolts on the exhaust have marks on them from where they had to loosen it.

I trust it was done correctly.

If they undersold the job...I guess win for me.

I guess you lucked out because most shops would not do the job for $250!

I probably had around $160 in parts alone for my job.

Guess so! Not complaining for sure.

I have to get my 2500HD Duramax 10 speed serviced soon at 45,000 miles. I plan on using the same shop. I haven't called to schedule it yet, but I wonder what they will charge for that transmission.
