2024 Tahoe Spare Tire replacement question(s)

Hi folks,

I want to replace the spare tire on my 2023 Tahoe and I wondered if anyone else has done this...

Firstly, the truck has 20" rims and tires. The OEM spare is a 17" marked "Temporary". Because of this spare I can't get an overland driving permit from the National Seashore (they require a normal tire for spare. Here are the questions...

1) Can I swap the current "Temporary" spare tire with a regular 17" tire and have it still fit on the existing spare rim, and also still fit in the well under the car?

2) Can I replace the current spare with a 20" tire mounted on a steel rim and have it still fit in the well under the car?

Read the owner’s manual, as it lists the tire-wheel sizes that do not fit under the vehicle & must be stored in the rear, inside.

My 2024 with 20 inch wheels & tires came with a tie down strap in the glove box.

Thank you for that info. Here is that section of the manual.

According to this, I can not store a 275/60R 20 (what is on the Tahoe) in the spare hanger.

The thread in the next reply implies that the issue is not the side to side or front to back dimension of the spare well, but the depth. The width of 275/60R 20 causes it to hang a bit lower than the original. If this is the case, I will never miss the inch of ground clearance.

I hate to disregard the manual, but I may test this out (by pulling a tire and hoisting it into the well) just to satisfy myself.
