For the people that like to change their own oil and filter. On a 2023 yukon 5.3l. What oil and filter do you use. In the past I used super tech or fram from good old Walmart and regular super tech oil. Now I’m thinking of using synthetic oil since the truck is new and I plan to keep it for a long time. Also how often do you change your oil?I did mine every 5000.

You ought to always at least use oil that is approved for your truck. Conventional oil hasn't been approved in these things for over ten years. Oil is asked to do a lot more work in today's engines and it's important that you use Dexos1 Gen2 approved oil. The fully synthetic SuperTech oil "should" meet that spec in the weight required for your truck.

Oil is dead by about 5K miles. Next time you change the oil, rub some old oil between your fingers and rub some new oil between your fingers and ask yourself, which would your motor like better?

I'll use most but not all Quaker State Pennzoil Valvoline or Mobil1 full synthetics in 0W20 0W30 5W20 or 5W30.
I've only ever dared use non-synthetic motor oil (5W20 only) to top off due to oil consumption between oil changes.

The cheapest Fram oil filter ... schidt, even the cheapest Wix oil filter, has recently become a piece of crap.
Take one step above the 'base' oil filter, they make them a bit better - finer filtration media, tougher construction.
I'd use a top of the line Fram 'cause I don't trust Fram. One step above Wix's base oil filter is good enough for me.

All that said, you can likely get away with any ol' 0W20 0W30 5W20 or 5W30, and the flimsiest barebones oil filter ...
provided you change them both every 3000 miles.
Even with the best oils and filters (don't forget air filters!), still get dirtier after more miles, than less miles.
Think how much dirt motor oil accumulates after 6000 miles of pure highway driving (best for the motor oil by the way).
That engine would still last longer if the oil and filter were changed more often, keeping the engine cleaner.

I know NYC cabbies driving around with vehicles with over 300,000 CITY miles, using the cheapest motor oils and filters possible - cooking oils for motor oil, maybe oil filters made of compressed panythose?
They change their motor oil and filter about every two months / 2500 - 3000 miles per oil change.

And even if I did not change my oil and filter myself, I'd not tolerate a mechanic's shop that did not use the oil and filter that I provided.

I always use AC OEM oil filters and Castrol Full synthetic and go by the OLM in the vehicle when to change it, NEVER use standard Conventional oil in these motors. The OLM tells me about every 3200-4000 miles to change oil. If you change it yourself save the receipts of the oil and filter and write the mileage down on the receipts just in case you need it for proof that you change the oil and filter if something goes wrong with the motor while under warranty.

I guess I will be the one to say it. We have had many of these posts in the past on this forum and some of us usually respond with a popcorn symbol as an indication of what is to come. You will get many, many different opinions on what oil and filter to use and you usually end up more confused than when you started. Just use a good-quality oil and filter and you should be fine. You can also check your owners manual. Good luck with your decision.

Being vehicle is under warranty I would only use AC filters and oil that is called for in owner's manual.
I would not give dealer a reason to denied warranty claim since there is known valve train problems.

Since BP bought Castrol, their so-called synthetic motor oils have fallen in quality considerably; it's no longer worth the premium that most stores still charge for it vs better synthetic oil brands such as Valvoline, Pennzoil, Mobil 1, or Quaker State.
The OLM tells me about every 3200-4000 miles to change oil.
The Oil Life Monitor only tracks engine RpMs accumulated between resets - kinda like a trip-ometer.
It will call for the next oil change regardless of air quality, ambient temps, motor oil quality, air filter quality, how soon after startup you drive, how soon after startup you drive like it's a race to get there, or whether you Tow / Haul light or heavy or not.
To be clear: the Oil Life Monitor is ever so slightly more nuanced than 'every three months or 3000 miles'.
Can't hurt to change oil and filter before it hits 0%.

I use the Acdelco gold filter. The oil is only approved 0w20 dexos1 gen2. We have this Wolf oil from Belgium. On all my cars, I change the oil clearly according to the regulations, on the Yukon it is according to the oil aging sensor

I was using super tech on my 2002 Tahoe and then in my 2007 sunburn. On the new yukon I will definitely use better oil. I heard good things about mobile 1. What is the part number of the ac delco oil filter? If someone knows.

I change it when it hits around 15%.

Mechanics choice and what I use is always AC delco and mostly Wix...which is Napa silver or gold. Mobil 1 bought at Walmart for best price. Cheap, easliy found and good insurance.

And Mobile1 synthetic 0w-20 my 22 Yukon is a 6.2 which was designed for Corvettes and Mobil1 is recommended
I also have a Corvette. Since it’s synthetic I wait til the change oil light comes on I think about 7,500 miles
Of course as always do change the oil

The investment you have in the truck is quite significant, for me that means running approved oil and GMC filter. just buy oil when it’s on sale.

For warranty reasons, I would not change my own oil on a GM vehicle. If your engine goes bad, they will aggressively look for any way possible not to honor the warranty. Have the dealer change your oil.

Could be true, but in reality, if you save your receipts and records, the Magnuson Moss act will prevent this from being the case...
