Hey guys I’m in the market for a Suburban, I already have an 08 Tahoe so I’m familiar with some things like AFM and the torque converter weakness of the 6l80e.

As I’m shopping around for 2015+ Suburbans what are other quirks of the platform I should keep in mind for long term ownership.

Thanks!

The 8 speed transmission had some issues but I guess the big one is the 6.2L engine recall. I’ve also read about AC condenser issues.

Isn't the 6.2 recall for the 2021 next generation Tahoe/Suburban?

Browse through this section of the forum and you'll get an idea.
It's typically said to avoid the 15&16 models.

The oldest of these is 10 years old now so there's also the normal age stuff to watch for. But they hold up a lot better then the 07-14s did.

just maintenance like any other vehicle
there are some that have some roof noise that is heard while driving, apparently it may have something to do with not enough glue used in the panels
8 speed should be avoided
some have had failed ac condensers, which was covered by gm at one point
some have had fuel injector issue's, the one I bought my wife had a special 10 year coverage and all of the injectors were replaced under that coverage.
the oem suspension (shocks) are not as robust as the gmt900's some have reported the shocks failing starting at about 45k, versus the gmt900's were typical of 85k+
if you are shopping used, check the transmission fluid we saw a lot of them with burnt fluid, practically all of them....
also check all the buttons, switches, door locks, windows, sunroof, mirrors, power folding seats, screens, sensors and gizmo's BASICALLY everything, if you find one that has everything working your lucky.
also note that the act of just opening a door on a k2 can wake the system up, that's normal, found that out when these were out on display in 2014
at minimum just opening the drivers door will display the mileage on the cluster briefly, the fuel pump may prime and you may hear other clicks and ticks, the radio may come on or light up, etc. that is because of the "most buss" which is a special connection between the radio & cluster & bcm.
so if you see one out on a lot and just want to check the mileage all you have to do is open the drivers door and look at the cluster, it only shows for a few seconds, you don't need the keys as long as it unlocked.
your 2008 will show it also, but you have to press the black button in the upper right hand corner of the cluster, no keys are needed

If it hasn’t had the AC condenser replaced, that’s going to eventually be a problem. Trust me, it’s been true on my 16 and 17.

It's a 2015 Suburban LT, 188,000 miles, 4wd, standard shocks in the front with a little lift block and air shocks in the rear, don't really know much else about it other than it had every oil change on the carfax.

Interior is perfect, exterior has some dents. $16.2k out the door before financing. There was also 2020 Suburban Z71 with 140,000 for $29k on the lot but the interior was trashed. Happy to get into one of these for such a low price.

Replaced the oil and trans filters this weekend, everything looks good. Waiting for Black Bear tune in email then we will be ready to... commute to work and back.

Only plans so far are some bilstein 5100s and to replace a noisy belt pulley.

With that mileage, the transmission failure has probably already occurred. Mine made it all the way to 159k before it croaked.

@Sparksalot I am hoping that most of the points outlined earlier in the thread have been addressed at this age and milage. One thing I can see is I need to flip the pill in the trans thermostat, I understand that's a must on these even tho my 4l60e runs at 190 no problem

I was going to say it looks like an LT, same thing I bought the wife except 2wd, a couple bells & whistles, but not LTZ bells and whistles
shouldn't give you too much trouble
you'll probably want to add fog lights for better visibility at night and HID or LED bulbs instead of the incandescent will be an improvement also.
the escalade mirrors are plugnplay and larger, better visibility
the superchips FR2845 F5 from Holley will let you dial it in a bit and won't break the bank. it will let you turn off v4 mode and put a transmission tune on it, adjust tire size, limiter, etc if so desired. I bought the refurb for like $340, holley does not have any refurbs in stock but this place says it does

I used the trans-go tstat eliminator. Same effort as flip the pill, but no doubt it’s in there correctly. This summer I added a tru-cool external transmission cooler.

I have no idea if the ac condenser was previously an issued. My transmission grenade took out everything in the fluid path, so I have a new condenser now.

I also did the Holley super chip tuner mentioned above. V4 is gone.

Was looking in the engine bay yesterday and it looks like the headgasket tabs are shiny so I suspect the lifters and cam were redone at some point. Waiting to hear back from Black Bear to get my AFM tune installed, I'll just run factory hardware until I have a failure

One thing I do, you probably already know it, is to run in M5 most of the time locally. Runs below 2000rpm at about any highway speed, keeps in V8 mode and the transmission feels more firm in shifting. On trips I run in drive and go for gas mileage.
