Wow. I finally found out what in the heck this was. Too bad I'm 5,000 miles out of warranty but I am going to replace these myself.

I took mine in today and they fixed mine for free, but I have been talking to gm for like 2weeks to try to get them to fix it, I even called gm while I was at the dealership and they said they would call the dealership service department.... I don't know if they called but I ended up paying nothing for the repair.

Anyone have any pictures or a video on how to remove the overhead console to get to the lights to replace them?

This is the best one I found, it's for a pickup but the overhead console was pretty much the same as mine. You can skip through most of the video but he shows were to pull it from and the screws, it's pretty easy once you see it. You only need about the first 4 min of the video.

as I expected the dealer wouldn't do a thing for me without me paying out of pocket for a diagnostic- since I already know exactly what the issue was it seemed silly to pay and then try to get reimbursed by GM- so I left the service center without them touching the truck

I called GM with my case number on the ride to work, and as also expected they were of no help-

Sorry to hear that about GM. At this point are you just going to replace them yourself. If so I would do a Google search for that GM part number and see if anyone is running a Cyber Monday sale. If you follow the Youtube above it does not look too bad.

Here is my write up on how to do this yourself. First let me start by saying I'm not super handy- but this was really simple to do yourself.

Step 1 is to remove the inner part of the over head console- flip down the sunglass holder so you can get your hand in there. Give a gentle tug and it pops right out.

step 2- pull the center console far enough down so you can access 2 Phillips head screws- that is all that hold the outer console to the roof. hardest part of this step is pulling all the wires and harness out of your way. the back of the center panel is held in by a "tongue and groove" in the back( closest to the windshield) it requires a firm down and in pull to get it to pop out- this was the scariest part for me because I was a bit nervous my gorilla tactic was going to break those clamps. now you unscrew- the main console will drop down

step 3- removal of the old lamp assembly- disconnect the male and female connector. the little light diod is clipped in to a slide clip- just pop it out
and put in new light module.

step 4- repeat on other side.

step 5 test the lights - all good ! now reverse steps to put back together- once again screw back the 2 phillips- hardest part again is clicking in the back of the main cosole. then simple pop back the middle console piece and your done.

part # GM 23396157. You will need 2. I purchased from GMpartscenterplus in Chandler AZ. The list price is $53.50, I paid $37.52 each with free shipping. They arrived in 3 days.

I hope this helps- simple easy fix

Just did mine. Super Easy. Ended up getting some new ones off of Ebay.

Every time I touched the pedal or turn signal.

So we started noticing that whenever my wife or I depressed the brake pedal the 2nd and 3rd row reading lights would strobe on and off once. Really annoying at night as they are quite bright. Like there's a photographer in the back seat with the flash on.

Took it to dealer and they were able to replicate it. They called GM Tech Support and we're told that GM is aware of the issue but no fix has been found yet. So we get to live with this until they find an electrical gremlin :-(

My 2015 Tahoe LT with sunroof is doing the same thing. My third row lights come on with the brakes and occasionally strobe. They also flash with my left turn signal. Tonight the drivers side front light also flashed with my turn signal, but only momentarily.

I thought about buying a complete overhead console off of eBay out of a newer model vs replacement lights. However, all of them have a 2 switch sunroof arrangement. My 2015 uses a single switch. Also, mine has the fold down mirror to view the back seats. I've attached some images of what I've seen on ebay. I'd love to swap mine as it has a broken bracket and doesn't fit flush to the ceiling nearest the sunroof (small gap).

The first image doesn't have the mirror, but appears to have additional lights and switch? Anyone have this model?

The second one has 2 pockets? What are they? I assume one is the mirror like I have... no clue what the other one is.

The last image looks like mine, but has 2 switches vs 1 for the sunroof. I guess I could swap my switch over if my wiring won't plug in.. and maybe add an auxillary switch for something? Maybe extra lighting.

Has anyone swapped their overhead console? This just seems like a great option, assuming I get one from a newer Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade that has the updated leds. I wouldn't mind having additional lighting if the first style will work.

Thanks!
Nick
