2015 Suburban: Exterior Pillar Covers Popping Off

If they were going to charge you I would have purchased the panel on line, less expensive, no tax and usually free shipping and replaced it myself.

I replaced my drivers side pillar "applique" this morning. Took about 7 minutes.
I ordered a replacement from https://www.gmpartsoutlet.net/

Part Number: 84263144 - Applique - $41.85

You need a #2 Philips and a T15 Torx bit. Photos attached.

See photo - the bottom piece is obviously the replacement. Notice it is secured by a machine screw at the top (round fastener) and two blue-ish green plastic pins in the middle and bottom.

The top screw can be accessed (removed/replaced) by pulling the rubber interior window molding back.

Then remove the T15 torx bit inside the door that secures the chrome exterior trim piece (Photo attached)


The old trim should pop out and slide out (towards back) pretty easily. Just put the new one back and refasten.

Interesting the replacement piece also included a small strip of double-sided automotive tape. Maybe GM thinks this'll fix the issue.

Wow, those ****** clips look cheap as hell too, small little plastic *** holding onto metal...at 70-75 mph, ha! i would have 3m double stick taped it all over ...

Just get yourself some 3M outdoor heavy duty double sided tape and put it on the little round mount toward the top in the center....then slide your pilar cover into place and push on that area pretty 'firmly' for a few seconds and they won't budge after that!!

Because the replacements are going to do the same thing!

I’m starting to have the same issues on my rear doors. Does one layer of tape do the trick, or do you need to double it up ? (for thickness)

This just happen to me lol, they really cheap plastics they used!

My right front one popped off. I completely removed those stupid little clips and their glue. All of it. Then used two long strips of 3m padded double sided tape.. the black stuff.. and secured the trim piece back on. Clean it and prep it well first with alcohol.

Those clip things are complete garbage smh.

If you use the 3M Extreme outdoor mounting tape which is double sided with red release ribbon it is MUCH stronger! It's more for permenant mounting and some seriously tough stuff!

Gorilla also has a double-sided tape product now that is substantially stronger than white 3M double-side. I bought it to fix a pillar rattle on my Tahoe and later used some of it to tape a sliding door guide down onto some tile to avoid drilling. It's not going anywhere.

Ya the 3M white double sided stuff is crap! This is what I used:

But, I have since used this one and it seemed even stronger! Doesn't have as much thickness as the above but the adhesive is as strong if not more so! (It even says it can be used to replace screws or rivets etc):

My passenger trim piece came loose when I was shutting the door and upon inspection I have found that 3 of the 4 are about to leave the building. I was an early adopter and bought my 2015 in July of 2014 and it has 50,000 miles....so I am out of warranty. I am taking a run at it with the dealer to see if they will replace at their/GM's cost. If/when that fails....for those that attached with silicone and/or some other hot glue solution...where did you apply the silicone/glue? to the perimeter of the piece (where the tape used to be). On that circular metal thing that looks like it used to be attached to the trim?

I bought the tape as well but would rather a permanent solution.

On an unrelated note...anyone else have the issue where the struts holding up the rear glass are rusted to hell?

The tape is probably a permanent solution. The problem is that GM used weak adhesive on those, if you throw some high-strength tape in there, I doubt it will come loose again. $7 solution, max.

Just did this repair on my 2015 Yukon Denali. I purchased mine new back in 2015 and these just came loose on a recent road trip from Chicago to Copper Mountain, Colorado. 5 of the 6 were loose with the front passenger door being the worst one (all 3 clip locations came unglued. Surprisingly enough, the driver's door is the only one that is still fully secured. I used the heavy duty (30lb rated) Gorilla mounting tape on all of the brackets and re-attached all of the trim pieces. Seems extremely solid now, going to have to see how it holds up. Thanks to those who mentioned this fix!!! It's clear to see that the design from the factory is prone to breaking as it allows zero flex from wind, door closure, etc...... I think the small amount of flex that the mounting tape provides will be beneficial vs. the brittle design from the factory.

Same here. 2015 Yukon. You can see all the fasteners failed on the driver door piece.

I used a little longer piece of 3M tape than GM uses. Holding up so far. I did not re-glue any of the fasteners back on.

Rear door driver side… both of the rear door pieces…
So I have two on order (I’m hoping “left side” is drivers side)

Now to order some tape to make this the last time I have to worry.
