To say that the truck has been struggling to start would be an exaggeration. It took a few seconds to turn over and fire up but nothing to cause concern. Made a few trips yesterday and parked it about 6pm. This morning it was about 50 degrees and at 6am it was graveyard dead. No lights, no nothing. Jumped it off, let it run, drove my daughter to school, then took it to get it tested. Get this... the current battery is rated at 460cca when it should probably be 700+cca. So aside from installing the correct size battery and making sure both ends of my positive and negative connections are clean and tight, should i be concerned that this small of a battery was in the truck?

Side note: the battery tested at 475cca after jumping it and driving it for about a half hour.

I would not think that there would be any permanent issues.

Hopefully, installing the correct sized battery will eliminate your starting issue.

These trucks were designed for a Group 48 battery with a minimum 615 CCA. Mine has had an ACDelco 48PS in it for about three years now without any problems. Darn I said it! Now it'll be time for a battery...

The battery is basically a reservoir for the alternator to dump in excess current, or for the system to draw out as needed when demand is high. Size/capacity in this regard is immaterial, because how much current is dumped into the battery is determined/limited by voltage. So basically, your truck just had a smaller drinking glass. No harm, no foul.

Just my opinion, The size of the battery did not create the low battery/slow crank situation? Find out why the battery was not being fully charged. I would guess you have a problem somewhere, Check the **** fuse on the firewall above the AC dryer for corrosion/fracture/tightness, replace the ground from battery to engine block, check the ground strap from left side engine aft head to firewall grounding post, make sure the positive cable to battery is good also, replace the charge control module that is attached to the battery ground cable on the side of the battery box, $18 rock auto. All opinions, i have the same vehicle and did all this plus added 2 ott ground and a 2 ott charge cable from alt to **** fuse, Understand your battery is charged/fused through the ****. My battery is the AC DELCO 48PG 770 CCA. Dont skimp on the batt, these vehicles are voltage/current hogs!

I did a Group 5 / L49 850 CCA Bosch / Varta AGM battery. It’s 2mm too big which means your coolant overflow on the 6.2L will sway to the side slightly.

This is the one with a 4 year over the counter warranty replacement warranty from any Pep Boys nationwide. They’re typically on sale for 25-30% off. You can bypass the online only pricing by simply printing the online add and bringing it to the store.

These are the best for extreme hot / cold conditions and spouses that like to leave DVD players running, engine off, key on. After a long run with Optima batteries for almost 20 years, I ditched them for Bosch.

“The battery always holds its contents inside and is secured against any leakage. The electrolyte would not spill (as it would in the flooded lead-acid batteries) preserving the battery capacity and saving the nearby area from burning. The battery posts don’t get sulfated, while the battery and car parts don’t suffer from corrosion.”
