New caliper and bracket on and now I need to do the flex hoses and stainless brake lines.

I started on the passenger side but need to blast and paint the bracket and bolts so this will go back together 2mrw.

Quick tip for removing parking brake cable. I pull back the spring and stick a 3/8” line wrench in there and it holds the spring back while I push the tabs in to pull cable from bracket.

Ran into an issue pulling axle bearing on passenger side. Haven’t had this happen in a long time.

Bearing exploded and came apart. It left the outside race stuck in the housing. So now I had to take the die grinder to cut the race. Started by making a groove with a pointed diamond bit.

Then started to open it up with a cylinder shaped bit so the race had room to compress. You can see the stress cracks from trying to get it to break with a chisel.

I have this punch that I’ve modified for things like this. Had to sharpen it a little on the grinder but it’s working. A little more grinding being careful not to go thru the race and nick the axle tube.

Finally got it! Pulled the rag I shoved into the axle tube out and cleaned the shavings out of the tube. Just have to do a little sanding to clean up where I was chiseling on the race and then install the bearing and seal. Should have known something would go wrong today. The drivers side went too easy.

I report back when done.

Great work! Thank you for sharing the step-by-step details.
My pleasure. I always feel like someone can benefit from seeing the steps rather than just the before and after pics. Maybe it’ll motivate someone to do it themself rather than paying to have it done. If I can do it, anyone can.

I’m thinking about setting up the GoPro and making videos instead of all these pictures and narration. Might take a little longer to edit and post but it may help others out on YouTube also. Nothing like shameless plugs on YouTube video directing the audience to this site. What do you guys think? Videos be more informative than pics?

Passenger side done.

I had this same issue with the drivers side but I didn’t include it because I thought maybe it was just a freak thing. But I guess not. Maybe it’s the adjuster I used being an aftermarket part, but here’s what the issue was.

Here’s the adjuster and also the part that applies the parking brake installed.

That is as far in as they can go. Like this, the brake needs to be opened up and fought on and it drags so much on the rotor it would smoke these shoes right off. I was thinking maybe the pin was a little too long but I don’t have an old one to compare it to. Here’s the assembly again for reference to what pin I’m referring to.

I didn’t want to cut the pin down so after looking at it, I have a little room on the adjuster side to make this thing sit in flush.
0bff6c90b7ac01fd3cc32cecacdaba0a.jpg

Took it to the bench grinder and took off as much as I could.
d1b09d25c82f485f666d4b6c064d8852.jpg

Now it sits in more and brake goes on much easier and gives me a little wiggle room to adjust the parking brake.

Axle installed, c-clip in, brake rotor on, parking brake adjusted and caliper installed.

Next plan of attack is new brake lines. I bought these stainless lines a while back and instead of waiting for a line to break, I’m replacing all the lines now with stainless and installing new hoses as well. I couldn’t find braided stainless ones for a decent price so I’m just going with replacements.

Looks like I may have to drop the fuel tank to get to the line going to the back. Not sure how much more I’m gonna do today. But as always, stay tuned, I’m getting this done this week because I want to tackle the exhaust manifold broken bolts and it appears my water pump has a slight leak so that’s going to be replaced here too. It’s always something.

Not much of an update, I’ve been a little busy trying to light a fire under my parent’s ass’ getting them moved. They want to go thru every little thing and can’t decide what they want to keep, sell or throw away. I’m dragging my trailer over there on Saturday and my brother and I are loading everything we can to get them going. I told them, I have to get them moved so I can get a few things done to their house before I can start moving into it. Then after that I have to get some things finished on my house before I can sell it. Snowmobile season is coming up fast and I’ll be damned I’m gonna miss any time because they want to drag their feet. They didn’t like me being a ***** too much but I’m not one to sugarcoat things and since I technically own the house now, I can evict them and their shit! Lol

So here is what I managed to get done.

Stainless lines are on the axle along with the 3 hoses, one on each caliper and the center one going up to hard line. I started dropping the fuel tank to get the rear line replaced and I also have the lines off the ABS module.

I’ve been working until 3pm and then moving from 3:30-9pm. This is gonna be my life for the next 2 months at least. Wish me luck.
