One reason - Because in a crash, someone on the inside may not be able to get out, or emergency personnel on the outside may not be able to easily get in.I believe it is part of regulation like you said… it’s a safety feature partially designed to keep the doors from opening during a car accident.
Maybe I’m a little slow but why do ppl not like auto-locks? It’s so non-intrusive and why on each would you care if the door is locked while in motion? Means someone cannot walk up to you and open the door at a red light and potentially keep the door closed during a car accident?
There are most likely other reasons, too.
