So I'm looking at this thing: http://www.apple.com/ipad-mini/overview/ ... and I'm thinking it is approx. the same size as a double din nav system, I can't think of a thing my nav system can do that the iPad mini can't do better ... other than play a cd of course, but I haven't used one of those in years.

It's slightly bigger so you'd probably lose a little bit of screen at the edges, but it's almost as if Apple had that application in mind when they designed it. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if some car manufacturers started using them, rather than use hardware with less capabilities and having to have an interface to mate with Apple products.

Whatcha think?

I like the idea and it alleviates the need to completely customize the dash for the iPad mod that we have seen before

Yeah, you'd of course have to figure out a way to mount it but still be able to use the side buttons ... but it seems a great fit for those without factory nav looking to upgrade their system without having to buy a new head unit.

Some smart businessman could even create a kit to replace our factory radios. :)

I've been in the same situation. I bought a Nexus 7 to use as an indash, but returned it after the poor sound quality from the headphone jack and because it doesn't support an external DAC to improve the sound. Have you decided what your going to be doing with your current head unit? I'm trying to decide if i want to get a single din unit and either try to mount it in the coin holder, or inside the center console lid so that i can still access it if needed, as well as have cd hookup still. My other option, is to just mount a single din behind the ipad in the dash, but then i would only be able to use steering wheel controls to control the unit.

Sweet, only problem I see the the bill for the data plan. Streaming everytime you are in the car would be expensive.

Honestly, to do it right you're talking about $1,000.

I installed mine in a 2003 tahoe. built it for less then $60. I jailbroke my iphone 5 so I tether from that.

I'm not trying to be mean but that's what I meant by doing it properly. That looks horrible. And you have way more than $60 in to it. You purchased an aftermarket radio and iPad that you're not including. Neil currently has a stock stereo.

Something that looks like this (my friends Yukon)...

gF1Wo.jpg

-He would need to buy an aftermarket radio that has an input for the iPod. I personally need something with high level pre-outs, so that's a couple/few hundred bucks.

-Needs the cable from the mini to the radio

-Needs then mini itself

-Needs radio bezel unless he's gonna use the OEM one and never go back to stock radio.

-Needs fiber glass, bondo, resin

-Needs paint or vinyl to cover the bezel once complete

Also if he's gonna take the iPod out (easily) he's gonna have to make/build something to motorize or pop out to get it out.
