The 2007 + rigs with the 5.3 have the cylinder deactivation mode. In the 2007 Tahoe brochure it brags how GM made the stock exhaust "quiet in this mode".
The reason I am asking this is I had a 2006 Dodge Magnum 5.7 Hemi, and a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 Hemi with this " cylinder deactivation", and when it was in this mode it "SOUNDED LIKE CRAP" with the stock exhaust. Could not put a aftermarket exhaust on these due to this. For those of you that have put a aftermarket exhaust on your 2007+ rides with the 5.3, how does it sound?? Great , no weird sound when it goes into 4 cyl mode... stight weird sound, or a lot of "weird sound". Also, can this be "turned off" with a plug in tuner like the Diablo etc.?

I have a 2009 5.3 and it never has a strange sound when in 4 cyl mode. It has a constant mean sound. You will rarely be in 4 cyl mode though unless you're light footed or on the highway cruising. I find that I'm almost always in 8 cyl mode. Most everyone on this forum has upgraded exhaust and has nothing but good things to say. Just do a search for exhaust and you will see many threads with details.

its harldy noticeable. There is a small tone difference. I dont notice mine unless im looking at the DIC or really listening for a change. As far as deactivation, far as i know, it cannot be turned off

I wouldn't give up the mean aggressive sound I have for such little change in sound for the rare times when you would be using 4cyl mode.

it is barely noticeable unless you are really listening for it. Also, it really only goes into 4 cyl mode on the highway so who can really hear it anyway.

Blackbear can remove the cylinder deactivation...not so sure about a hand held.

I have the Gibson dual side swept exhaust and it sounds completely awesome on my '07 5.3L. Like the others have said, the change in sound when in V4 mode is very minimal. If you didn't know what you were listening for you would never hear or notice it.

Thanks for all the info!

Thanks for all the info.... now what brand to chose. I want "not too loud, NO DRONE sound". Looking at the Flowmaster force 2 side system. I have bought nothing but Gibson cat backs up until 2007 on my Titan... put a Banks on it.

Hey jd08 - I promise I'm not stalking you...LOL

Can you tell us more about the resonator delete pipe you installed? Just a local exhaust shop job? Any sound clips?

I bought it from SLP Performance parts. I installed it myself in about 30 minutes. Sorry no sound clips.

I would assume a local shop could do this for a little cheaper but I wanted a something that I could do myself.

Here is a link to the kit I used.

I've got the flowmaster 40 series installed on my truck, like everyone else said it has a slight difference in tone when going into 4 cyl mode but very minimal. Has a very good, low tone to it, no drone.

Hey Sensinitas,
I put the SLP tip on my 2011 Tahoe about a month ago. It deff gives it a little rumble when you hit the gas or put a load on the engine. I have no other mods on my Tahoe and it currently has 2,700 miles on it. It took me about 45 mins to install it, very easy and looks clean.

BTW, i live in Encinitas if you wana come by and check it out. PM me if you do.

Did you use a clamp or have it welded? What kind of clamp did they send u-bolt type or band? Thanks

I use the clamps that came with the kit, no welding. As far as clamp style its a Band style clamp. They supply 2 of them with the kit. One for where you cut off the resonator and put on the SLP pipe and one to attach the dual tip to the pipe.

The only thing i had a little trouble with and it might have been my mistake was where to cut it. I swear i read the directions correctly and im not an idiot when it comes to tools and directions. I had trouble sliding on the exhaust hanger thats welded to the SLP pipe into the factory rubber location. Again, i dont know if i just cut it wrong or the fact the my Tahoe is a 2011 and maybe they changed the position of the facory exhaust hanger....i dont know.

Once i cut the resonator off i figured the best way to install it, after having some difficulty getting the SLP pipe and exhaust hanger to slide into the factory location was to hang the SLP pipe in the factory location AND THEN slide the SLP pipe onto the factory exhaust pipe. Worked like a charm and then slid the second clamp on, then the sweet looking dual tip, tighten it down and away i go.

I have my camera here at work, i'll try and take a pic or 2.

The best way to get the most quality sound from your muffler is to turn the pipes down a couple inches from exiting the muffler. That way you will eliminate running the exhaust through a couple feet of pipe. Some shops may not do this as state laws require rear exit exhaust at the back of the vehicle.

Thanks! I checked out the link. $129 is a lot just to remove the resonator. I think BOSS's idea below might be the way to go. I don't know the laws here in CA about it, but how would the cops know anyway? ;)

I just can't get my head wrapped around a $600 catback system. I really only want to hear the V8. I could care less if I get an extra 5hp. I didn't buy this thing to go fast! I have a Subaru for that...lol :happy107:

Hey Jordan-

FWIW - I looked at the SLP product, and thought it was just too expensive for removing the resonator. So I went and got a quote from RPM Muffler in Oceanside. Richard quoted me $280-300 for a full 3" catback with either an Aero or Magnaflow muffler. Just in case you were ever interested in going with a full CB.

I don't have the funds to get this done right now, but when I do, I'll post up some pics and vids.
