Stock intake tube modification

Hello! Being new to the Tahoe world and having come from a G8 GT with a Rotofab CAI, the induction silence of the Tahoe has been killing me. I don't have the budget for a good CAI at the moment but I kept on thinking-can all of the Helmholtz chambers be blocked without too much obvious hackery? 2 of those chambers also serve as passthroughs for the crankcase ventilation system so they couldn't be totally blocked off either.
Here's what the stock tube looks like inside:

This is what I came up with. I cut slots between the chambers and the main intake tube to push in some custom cut blockoff plates:

for when the oscillating saw couldn't reach far enough, this got me the rest of the way:

I cut .8mm scrap sheet aluminum into some funny shapes to push into those slots (note the 3/8" holes for the 2 crankcase vent chambers). It was a ton of cut, check fitment, mark, cut again, check fitment, etc. to get to these shapes. I left extra metal at the top to have something to press the plates in with and remove them for trimming and sealing. The little hole at the top of the tall one is a leftover from the scrap metal's prior life and is completely outside of the port so it has no effect.

Throughout the whole process, I made sure to meticulously vacuum out cutting debris since I don't want anything getting sucked into the engine due to a silly free mod.
To make sure I didn't have any external air leaks, I globbed way too much high temp RTV on the plates before sliding them in and covered the outside edges with more RTV:

I didn't try to totally seal off the chambers (especially the crankcase vent ones that I drilled holes through)-I just got them mostly blocked off to prevent them from doing their "muffling" job. You can't see the 4th plate from the inside but in the RTV pic, you can see it slotted in. Forgive the random ugly scratches which are blind misses from 60 grit sandpaper I used to get errant plastic blobs off from the slotting process.

So, the burning question...does it work? Well, it's not a performance mod for sure-it's just blocking off the induction muffling chambers for MOAR ROAR! At part throttle, I don't notice a sound difference but the engine has a distinct new growl under heavy throttle and it sounds great. Still a bit quiet but for being a free mod that maintains the factory look (from the top) with a factory intake tube and no apparent compromises, it's a win in my book. I know that there's cheap aluminum intake pipes out there but they don't use the factory crankcase vent lines and since they are metal, they probably conduct a fair amount of heat into the intake air. Most expensive intakes are plastic/composite of some sort, probably for thermal management.

Okay I'm confused. Why are u doing that to the plastic intake tubes that are replaced with inexpensive tubing? And if I'm not mistaken, bypassing that will create drones and moans on different rpms. It's on there for a reason.

Okay I'm confused. Why are u doing that to the plastic intake tubes that are replaced with inexpensive tubing? And if I'm not mistaken, bypassing that will create drones and moans on different rpms. It's on there for a reason.
The Helmholtz chambers are on there to get the total NVH down on the engine, even at the expense of pleasant or enjoyable intake noises. The factory NVH tuning primarily tries to get the total decibels down regardless of whether they are "good" or "bad" sound. I have been lucky so far that on 5 different vehicles I have owned (3 with v8s), an aftermarket or custom intake tube has not produced any drones or moans. I unfortunately can't say the same for aftermarket exhaust though as drones and moans are annoyingly common! The purpose of this was to create a "poor man's" unmuffled aftermarket intake tube that replicates the unmuffled effect of a pricey aftermarket intake tube and it was a success-no drones, moans, CELs, spontanious rod ejection, etc. ;) It's just a very linear growl increase. I think if drones and moans from the intake were actually problem, aftermarket manufacturers would integrate their own helmholtz chambers but I haven't seen one yet for our vehicles or any I have owned. Higher end aftermarket exhaust manufacturers Do integrate silencing chambers (Helmholtz, tuned length secondary tubes, etc.) so the elimination of drones and moans is still a consideration for the aftermarket where it's needed.

Well, if you are happy with it, and it achieves your goal, then bravo to you, as you are the only one that you need to satisfy on this mod.

From my perspective, a $200 Airaid MIT Tube would have accomplished the same result, and a lot less of your fabrication time. But, in many cases, the actual work of fabricating something that is successful as a finished product is more than enough reward for the time and effort spent.

I'm also confused... if you admit it's not a performance mod... and all the work was done inside of the intake tube... shouldn't this post be moved to the interior section?? I'll see myself out

What I was saying or trying to say was the other way around. Drones and moans with the stock modified. But to each is own. If it works and u have proved it, get r done!! I was just confused as to why spend that time and not 80 something for an aftermarket bolt on is all.

What I don't like about those ones is the tube is usually metal (heat conduction), they usually have an iffy oiled air filter, and their "air box" doesn't seal out hot engine bay air as well as stock or something really good like an Airaid intake (or in G8 land, Rotofab). Didn't stop me from being quite tempted by one like you posted, though I went a different direction: the super cheapskate+way too much fabrication effort route.

The main reason I posted this whole writeup was because I hadn't seen anything else done like it for our trucks and thought someone else might be interested and want to give it a try too. I'll probably be saving up for an Airaid (or similar) someday but was itching for a stopgap solution.

Well done, @madmax032. Certainly looks like it was less than an AirAid tube. Now see if your GM OE tube can outperform the AirAid tube?
Even it it doesn't though, still, well done.
I bet it would be hard pressed to outperform an Airaid tube due to the funky transitions molded in by the factory but if someone wanted to dyno it, I'd love to see that!

Performance comes in different forms... ;) It's definitely a mod, though of the auditory nature primarily. I'll admit that I waffled on where to post this but thought it still fit better in this subforum.
