for my dual battery setup I just bought the cable that goes from the 2nd battery to the starter and ran a ground over to the 1st battery, I believe I also ran 2 cables off of the alternator one to each battery.
that is "parallel" and it doubles the amp hours and cca's
other options include using a isolator like many rv's, boats or car audio use, some are automatic and some are manually switchable.
just choose one that will meet your anticipated amperage needed.
I would love to see some pics of your dual-batt setup, too!

Tahnks!

sorry about that I tend to ramble.. the brushless fan is on the corvette which is alt limited. they are made by spal for the oem (I used a c7 zo6 one but the zl1 camaro one is said to be 900watts if I remember right) they sell aftermarket ones too straight from spal, German company I believe. good stuff. they should sell a set you can fit into your tahoe, and there's a pwc controller to run it all. idea is uses less power for the same amount of airflow, but then if you need it, will more air too.

my yukon is a oddball with no alt and a weird 3 speed fan setup using resistor packs. if it ever goes out I'll dig into some brushless for it then.
Thanks!

sure once I get the engine compartment cleaned up it's about time for me to do my semi annual engine compartment cleaning. had to take a couple long trips thru rain and snow and pretty much treaded water with it so it's due for a pressure wash.

this what I would do, oem and easily sourced parts. I've seen a few pics and threads on the corvette boards of the mechman failing and long wait times for replacements. not a big deal when your corvette sits in the garage most of the time and they do look nice all billet and powered coated. not great when you're away from home. I do road trips so have stayed with a oem and lessened the load with by changing to pwm brushless fan and things like that.

as said above, definitely make sure your alt wire can handle the extra current. my old 96 I put the larger case diesel alt on it after going electric fans. charged great but the alt wire was warm to the touch. had to step up wiring gauge.

ict makes a very nice atl spacer if you ever need to run a larger case alt in the stock bracket. all things being equal, larger case the larger the rotor and stuff, more efficient and cool better than getting the same power out of a smaller package.

just info I've found looking around at alternators.
Hi @j91z28d1

I know this is an old post, but do you have part numbers for the alternator and fan that you mentioned in your comment?

Going to make the jump to upgrade my alternator to higher output one and I want to stick with GM parts.

I have the 160 A 25877026.

The one I am considering is 13536552 which is supposedly 220 A.
I have also seen 84143539, but I think it is later model years?

Are either of these a direct plug-n-play for my 2009 5.3? If not, then what are some other GM alternators I should consider for about the same output of 220 A?
Do I need to do the big 3 upgrade, too? I am not running any high power audio.

Can you run a second positive cable from the alternator to the Aux battery without causing any issues down the line?

I hope so. I was planning to run another cable as well.

The route it takes to charge the second battery is: Alt--> 175A fuse-> Batt1-> Starter-> Batt2.

Don't know if it matters or not, but considering extra alt cable and extra block-body-chassis grounds.

220A Alternator is drop in. Slightly larger post maybe? May need a new nut...

The proper method and how easy or hard that is to do is another thing
mine are connected in parallel like this, with both positive connected at the starter and battery A is connected to the alternator
CHAR.jpg

according to this guy that works but is not really the 100% correct way, his drawing assumes there is nothing else connected, which is where the problem is.

Back to the alternator question...

From what I am understanding, the two GM alternators I am looking at should be drop in with the exception of the post might be a different size. Is there any reason why I should choose 13536552 over 84143539, and vice versa?

Are there other GM alternators that output about 220-250 A that I should consider for my 2009 5.3, and that will be mostly plug and play?

I am assuming with the higher out alternator I should consider upgrading cables to a larger size (big 3). But is that really necessary if I am not running high output audio equipment?
