Now I'm seeing that the new bushings are shorter
Wait...what? How much shorter? That's weird.

I just installed new lower control arms on both of our GMT900 Yukon XL's because I was afraid of some weird thing like this popping up. Advance Auto had a good deal on them so I bought 2 from them at around $130 each.

They fit... it's weird at first, but the steel sleeve is the same length, but the rubber compresses and lengthens as it's pressed through the bore.

The lower ball joints were replaced a couple months ago, which is why I just wanted to replace the bushings vs. replacing the entire control arm with a new one.
I couldn't get the ball joints out of my old ones, despite grinding away the stakes/ears and using a ball joint press. Any secrets from your experience that might've helped?

I used an angle grinder & cutoff disc to completely remove the folded lip from the old ball joints. I also ground relief cuts where possible, so once the rented press started shoving the ball joint through the bore it had a little room to fold in on itself.

I also hit the end of the LCA with a torch for a few minutes, then cooled it down with PB Blaster, a few times.

In the end I bent the rented press sleeve a little bit, but it worked.

The old & new. It tripped me out at first.

I would assume the old ones are stretched from being pressed out and used.

Yeah, the rubber squished and stretched out to fill the void.

It's all back together now, and torqued up. I probably didn't need to change them out, but the were the some of the only parts not new in the last few months in the front end. At least I get paid to work on it.

I have a random question. I'm looking to upgrade my brakes. I don't want or need to go with larger diameter rotors, but I would like to replace them as well as the calipers.
Just looking for ideas and any info from those who have experienced with any particular make/model.

Thanks :)

Without reinventing the wheel, cross drilled and slotted rotors and some decent pads. I prefer ceramic because they don't produce as much dust on the wheels.

You could also get a set of rear calipers from a GMT800 and swap them onto your GMT900. 800s run a dual piston rear caliper, 900s run a single piston rear caliper.

I have never done this swap so I cannot vouch for how much difference this makes.

Been using PowerStop rotors and pads but my issue is with the calipers. They keep sticking, burning through pads and rotors.

I could just buy new calipers.

Huh, thanks I didn't know that. I'll have to look into that. It would be an upgrade that's for sure.

I just installed these Raybestos Element 3 rotors and pads on my 08 LTZ about 3 months ago and I’m real happy. They’re not drilled or slotted if that’s what you want but they came with good reviews both from another member here but online also. They’re quality and the pads are a hybrid ceramic and semi-metallic and I’m seeing little to no dust. Their rotors are fully coated against corrosion also. All 4 rotors and pads were $312 shipped. They seem to stop way better than stock IMO.

Those are what I've been running for a couple years now, and the rotors have some sort of effective coating that has resisted road-salt/winter rusting the best of any rotor brand I've ever tried.

Their performance has been plenty good, as well.
