Cousin gave me a 99 Yukon. Key fob locks/unlocks doors. Even beeps horn once indicating it's armed the second time you press lock on the fob. However, open any door and no alarm sounds. No headlights/lights/security lights come on or flash either when arming, when armed, or when opening doors while alarm is armed.

Notes: It looks like someone replaced lock cylinder and we don't have any transponder keys for it. Engine always starts no matter what you do with the fob/doors.

Any help much appreciated.

Just because you have a fob does not mean it came with the factory alarm. More than likely that rig does not have the OEM alarm. My sons 06 Silverado is like that.

Would the absence of an electronic device inside the front seats console confirm that it doesn't have one? It is the SLE Yukon model, whatever that means. Since the basic equipment is already installed, would putting a cheapo DEI alarm in it be easy enough to do myself?

You need a Tech2 or similar as it sounds like you have a modified system already. Adding an aftermarket alarm will only cause headaches in my opinion. It is possible to install factory alarm from a Upullit and reprogram vin with Tech2.

I take it a 'Tech2' is a computer device? Can anyone use one or do you have to be a GM employee? Is one expensive?

fobs, doors, locks, nor anything else for that matter will stop the truck from being started and driven away with a key that turns the ignition. there is no transponder on the 99, the best you will get is if someone broke the lock cylinder and managed to screw up any hall sensor that would then tell the ecm to turn off the fuel pump power, that is the only thing that stops anyone from driving it away, any steering wheel lock is tied into the ignition switch with a pin, turn the ignition and the pin retracts and the steering wheel turns, engine starts and off it goes. we are talking 30 year old technology, pull the ignition, jumper the fuel pump relay, stick a screw driver in and drive it away.
any halfway decent thief just sticks a lag bolt in the ignition with a dent puller, bang out comes the ignition, most older cars have nothing to then stop them from sticking a screw driver in and turning the mechanism behind the lock cylinder and driving it away.
things to check:
if the door "ajar" sensor is not working the horn will never honk if the door is opened, one way to tell is if the interior lights come on or not when you open the door assuming the dome light switch is not turned off or if the radio stays on after the key is removed and the drivers door is opened.
check all your fuses.
bottom line, if you want it to not get broken into invest a little in a aftermarket alarm 2-way, and have the installer place the alarm LED where it has high visibility. that alone deters the common low life scum, that and don't leave anything in the vehicle in plain sight that you don't want to be gone in the morning.

Well the dome lights are probably burned out because two of the side door lights do still come on when side doors are opened. Also, OEM radio no longer operates when key removed whether door opened or not. I guess this one never had the alarm installed. I'm hesitant to have an alarm installed though because I hear there are complications that happen because of the other security thing they install behind the dash gauge assembly. (A security light does appear for a few seconds when you turn the key to 'on'. Wouldn't that be a pain to pay someone $300 to do an install at electronic express only to find out it doesn't work on my model? Or would they know about the unique issue of installing on my make/model/year?

you will be fine having a aftermarket alarm installed, just don't have a "friend" install it, go to a shop.

Tech2 just the recommended scanner for GM. Could use a VCX Nano also, Clones #100-300. There is a list of members here willing to share based on location. Pays for itself nearly first time.

The radio does not work without the ignition on. You can hold the volume button down (or maybe the recall button, I forget) to show the clock.

These didn’t come with a factory alarm system option. The horn chirp is just to let you know that the doors are locked. Fairly low-tech by today’s standards. The security light coming on and going off is the system test for the Passlock system - that kills the injectors if a key isn’t used in the ignition cylinder.
