No one really know where this is going concerning vehicle that tow and haul large loads. Personally, If I had a prized RV or 5th wheel, I'd buy the last year that a Cummins was available and ride it for 10+ years.
Another issue as EV comes on is generating capacity. It has been proven that if 90% of Calif switched to EV, they would be woefully short in generating capacity to power all the vehicles in garages, let alone its industry base....
The major problem is they keep taking power plants offline that can be used as base capacity. Those are plants that can change their output up or down to meet demand. Wind and solar can't do that and do not perform well at night. That is when most folks will be charging their EVs. Our country had better build more natural gas fired power plants or nuclear plants to meet this upcoming demand or rolling black outs will be the new norm at night. Scary stuff considering it takes close to 10 years to get a new power plant up and running but our lawmakers are not even addressing base capacity but pushing EVs that will overload the grid well before new plants can come online :( Very short sighted in my opinion

If you had a dedicated short daily commute an EV would be perfect. I have a friend in FL and his wife is a doctor at a local hospital 10 miles away. Back and forth many times. Drives a Tesla and is perfect for them for this purpose. Charges in the garage every night.
But on the flip side of this, her husband has a new hemi Ram 1500 for when they go across state for sports events, etc. Also of minor concern is Hurricane evacuation which just happened during Irma in 2017. Many people sat 6 hrs on 75 trying to evacuate SWFL... EV's just wouldn't cut it in this situation...

they actually would be just fine sitting and idling for 6 hours during an evacuation. look at some tesla boards, users claiming they can keep the cabin climate controlled 15-20 hours with the heater on

but its awesome waiting 2 hours for gas during an evacuation

The point of the article was why people gave up their EV’s. Battery charging. Not living in private homes or having access to charging stations. Also the batteries are not completely recyclable.

EV’s are great if that’s what YOU want, need and can afford. They are not for everyone and shouldn’t be forced upon everyone.

And that is why I have diesel vehicles... 30% further range, Stations are NEVER out of diesel in emergency situations and you don't have to wait in the line. 600 mile range...
Also it was reported that there were EV's along 75 abandoned because they ran out of reserve and caught rides with other vehicles. If you are sitting in a heavy tropical storm pounding rain with lights on, wipers on high, and AC on high because its 90+ degrees and 90% humidity creeping along at 5 mph, you can bet that battery percentage meter will be dropping steadily and if you get off at an exit with a charger, you have no guarantee they will have electric at all during a hurricane...No thanks...

stations can have all the diesel in the world at them, if the station has no power youre not getting diesel either.
im sure there were plenty of other abandoned cars also on the side of the road, you shouldnt be evacuating if youre already in tropical storm weather.

i agree its not ideal but dont make it like its a death sentence, if you have a 80kw battery and youre using 10kw an hour, which is a hell of a lot, you can bumper to bumper along for 8* hours before you run out. youre not getting 600 mile range after sitting in traffic for 4 hours and only moving 50 miles. in an EV youre not wastefully burning fuel idling

I have always been able to get diesel. The truck stop I go to for diesel has a generator.

Last storm I used my 1987 Mercedes 300d and wasnt worried about fuel.

Also 90% of the stations I know in FL have generators. For sure the newer ones. They've learned a few lessons...And they are required on any new builds...

Most people don't pull the trigger on evacuation until the very last minute.. They want to stay unless it is going to be catastrophic.
When it goes from a cat 1-2 (Stay home no problem..) To a 4 or higher in 24 hrs, (Becoming more and more common...) the tune quickly changes and EVERYONE is on the road at once in various states of preparedness...

I've never seen an electric car in the wild.

Yeah yeah yeah, we all know they are coming because the government told us so.
OMG Is exponentially more subsidized, incentivized and protected than EV’s but I won’t bring that fact up...

But you are right, they’re coming, despite the gnashing of the teeth.

In fact, the group moving most quickly to EV’s are, wait for it, boomers.

Tell me how do I get a tax credit on a gasser? Are you saying the electric industry doesn't get subsidies?

EVs are the boondoggle of the century. They're the dog that won't hunt.

I did see one at the Audi dealership tethered to the charger by its umbilical cord. Haha, what a joke.

EV subsidies cost $7B and are being phased out.

OMG subsidies and incentives cost taxpayers, conservatively, $10B but depending on how you calculate could be up to $40B. Of course neither figure includes the staggering cost of oil wars.

Pretty sweet the Audi didn’t need to send someone down to a gas station to “fill up”.

No matter how obstinate you are about them...those non hunting dogs are about to surround you...
