New Red top Optima.

My old Red top finally crapped out.

It was supposed to have 800 CCAs and it tested out at 202 CCAs so I guess it was time... lol

Had my son cut the opening for the cabin air filter today and install the filter and retrofit door.

Man was the evaporator coil nasty dirty...

That is what 260k miles worth of gunk build up looks like.

I had him clean it out real good with the foaming coil cleaner that I bought for just such an occasion...

Pretty nasty stuff ran out of the A/C condensate drain line and out into the pan we used to catch the mess...

Activated charcoal and baking soda. Should be pretty good, I hope.

The A/C has got to work better without all that dirt on the coils.

Those filters aren’t really necessary as you can see, just ask GM.

I remember when I had my 00 it came with a cabin filter but I never new it had one when I did eventually find out and went in to change it the filter looked about like your condenser plus i think about a cup of dirt came out with it, lol I had noticeable better air flow afterwards.

Same here on my 02. I think it was the original filter, and had been in there for 12 years. Yech. It had so much crap it was crazy- leaves, dirt, bugs, etc.

Meanwhile, your wife is looking all over the kitchen for something to cook the turkey in... LOL

How old was the battery btw?

I cut a hole for mine a couple years ago and am glad that I added that “mod”. Why they stopped...I’ll never know. Probably to save money for the airbag lawsuit they knew would eventually catch up with them. I mean seriously GM, no cabin air filter on a SUV that you’re charging $30k-$75k for.
With that being done and having a charcoal filter, you will know when it’s time to clean er’ out again. It will be right about the time you get a wiff of that musty condenser during the summer after cranking up the a/c. It goes away after a 30 sec to a min, but it’s a good sign that it’s time for a condenser bath.

They make a foaming coil cleaner with a long small flexible hose attached so you can get to the top without blasting gunk into your dash or getting things soaked the way other cleaners tend to do.
I do like the thanksgiving day aluminum foil preparation you used to help channel the flow of collected debris into your “catch pan”. I had a taller drip pan that didn’t very work well and without the aluminum foil slide I swear more of it missed the pan than went in it. Thank the maker of WeatherTech!

I forgot to mention, I also turned on the "Afterblow" option with the Tech 2.

It is supposed to help with the musty smell you speak of.

I’m not familiar with that...is it something that can be done with an Autel scanner or is it Tech2 specific?

I'm not sure about the capabilities of the Autel.

The Afterblow feature causes the blower motor to run for 4 minutes after the engine is turned off under certain conditions.

Ambient temperature must be above 70°.
The A/C must have been run for at least 2 minutes.
Battery voltage must be above 12.4V.
Engine off for at least 45 minutes.

The idea behind it is that with the A/C off the evaporator isn't being cooled and therefore condensation isn't being created so the blower motor turns on to dry up any remaining moisture to help alleviate the environment for the mildew/musty smell to grow.

The Afterblow feature is found under the HVAC menus, take a look around with your Autel, maybe you can find it.

Interesting! See you learn something new every day...well if you make it a point to do so that is. Otherwise boys...it’s just a day that’s wasted.
I’m surprised that isn’t a “feature” turned on at the factory. I’ve seen some vehicles (Yuks and Hoes included) that end up with wet carpets/floor mats that you think could have been prevented with this option turned on. Im sure it would only be helpful in addition to their coils being cleaned and/or the cabin air filter replaced.
I’ll have to check that feature out and let you know what I can’t stumble across. Sometimes the Autel is finicky with the body style chosen and wont “allow” certain features to work, but if you change the year/body style sometimes that’s all it takes.

Anyone else tried out this function using any version of the Autel scanners or any other scanners for that matter?

I noticed today while I had the rear hatch open that the rear blower motor was running with the key off. I checked the front blower and it was not running.

I paid attention and it went off then a little later it came back on and the front blower was on as well.

A little later they both went off and stayed off.

I guess this is normal "Afterblow" behavior???

@swathdiver

Got any ideas James? You ever notice this with yours?

I never gave much thought to the rear blower working with the Afterblow feature, but I guess it makes sense.
