Worth Painting Hood and Top

2008 Yukon Denali, 6.2L, Stealth Gray Metallic (32V), 178.000 miles, bought used in 2015
No mechanical issues (knock on wood).
It would blue book about 8K if it were in perfect condition.
I just spent $1,000 on brakes/rotors and sway bar links.
Thinking about replacing front and rear lights with new style LEDs, about $600 for front and rear.
I love my Denali and plan to keep it. I don't want to spend $100K on a new one.

Hood and Roof have scaling paint.
Estimate to paint Hood and Roof $3800
Is it worth doing both, or should I do the Hood Only? You can't see the top from the ground unless you're 7 feet tall (LOL).
Not sure about painting the Hood only cost, assuming around $2,000

I would appreciate any input.

It’s always been my opinion that questions like this can really only be best answered by yourself.

Only you know how much longer you’re going to keep your vehicle.
Only you know how much having a repainted hood on your rig is worth having for you.

Whether it’s “worth it or not” is a very subjective question…

Will you recoup that cost if you sell it? No…

Personally for me the “worth it” part is time…. Cost of said “refresh” maintenance for the betterment of your vehicle and/or driving experience.

Let’s say you know you’ll keep it for another 2-3 years. To me that’s 50K-80K more miles.

$2,000 to repaint a hood… Spread out over 2-3 years of satisfied ownership is pretty cheap in my eyes. That’s just me. But I’m using ASSumptions on time and ownership as an example for feedback sake.

It’s only worth it if you plan on keeping it. If not, why bother.

And that’s for virtually all cosmetic improvements. Model year and mileage basically dominate book values. Issues certainly reduce value, but improvements rarely increase.

I would check around to other body shops for price on painting hood and top estimate seem a little high.

Have you checked local junkyards to see if they'd have a hood in good condition in the same color? Or possibly they'd know of a cheaper auto body place that does good work.

One problem you might run into is if the rest of the rig is faded and you slap a freshly painted hood on it. It might stick out like a sore thumb. After all it is 17 year old paint on the rest of the rig.

You could also look into having the hood and roof wrapped. That should be way less then $3800.

I just had my hood painted on my 2015 Tahoe. Paid 2k. Came out great. You get what you pay for. Cheaper shops were less of course but had Less than stellar reviews. I had this shop’s work before and always good. I’ve used some other places where I had them redo it or other shops fix it because it wasn’t up to my standard. Good shops sometimes are hard to find. Yes there is orange peel but they match the factory finish. They could have compounded it more but then it would look funny having a show quality hood and the rest of the truck OEM paint. Most important 0 paint nibs and good uniform finish.

My roof is also faded, but since you can’t really see it I skipped that.

I drive an 04 Yukon and had/have similar issues with the paint both hood and roof. I had excellent luck painting the roof with a roller. I used semi gloss and should have used gloss. As for the hood: tried painting a hood from a junk yard. First time with lphv gun. Too small a compressor so the gun would stop mid-sweep. Long story, not a good paint job.

Just an FYI... if you look around, you should be able to find a better deal... I found a guy that painted my hood for $300... matches perfectly and a great job. I have found a guy that does great work and will do the whole Tahoe for $3000. Quite frankly I am about to buy me one of those new gravity feed paint guns and do it myself.... I could do it for probably $750 to $1000 easily

If your handy at all, my paint on my black 2004 XL was about gone and painting it I would have to mortgage my house. So I bought 60 feet of gloss sparkle metallic black wrap and spent several days with YouTube and then wrapped from bumper to bumper. Costs less than $700 in materials. Did one section at a time over a month and now looks showroom new. It's not hard at all. Just takes patients. This weekend I will take some pics and post. Working sunrise to sunset. Stay tuned.

I just had the rocker and cab corner replaced on one side on my 2003 Silverado. The body shop also REPLACED the hood. Total cost $2,000. I was more than satisfied with the work. $3,800 for just paint seems a bit high to me.

I have a 2001 Tahoe with 315k miles and going strong. It has the same paint problem. I priced just the hood and it was $600. He said the roof is high because they have to paint the whole thing. I never did ask how much the roof would be. Thanks for posting this, I am going to get my hood painted now. Like you said I can't see the roof anyway.

Just a quick Update.
I decided to go with Maaco.
I know, not the best or most popular option, but got the whole Denali done for $1800.
I have to say I am very impressed.
I will provide before and after photos once I've completed a few more tasks.
I am replacing the emblems myself, plus new LED Head, Tail, and Fog Lights.
Going to fix the dash, the typical issues, and most likely going to install a new 12.1" Infotainment system, replacing the current factory system.
I am including a teaser photo.
This is the Roof where the damage was the worst.
It was taken when I picked it up.
It has some dust and pollen water spots on it; it had been sitting outside a couple of days before I picked it up.
Also included a before photo showing the Hood and RooF damage.
